I suppose this MIGHT be SIMPLE.
I've encountered two apps that were made XP SP2 compatible and they TOTALLY disable my internet connection when I install them. Simply installing them destroys a working system.

    I run W98SE, NOT XP.

I can't upgrade. Way too expensive to resolve all the conflicts.

Now I discover that XP SP2 compliant apps that use the internet appear to be incompatible with 98.

The two apps I've encounted are Live Update from Symantec and Grisoft's A/V Free.

You should have read the smoke that Symantec was blowing about some "worm" or "trojan". Simply NOT true.

Grisoft wants me to buy before I try since I can't get the free version to work. What's wrong with that? No clue as to whether they can solve the problem, but what the heck, $50 or so down the toilet, I don't think so.

Only clue I have is that things go from "incoming/outgoing" to "routed" in ZoneAlarm.
I can't figure it out, but communications isn't my forte.
In fact I'm not sure I have one anymore. But THAT is another story.

I don't suppose there are many stuck with 98SE as I am.
It probably is unreasonable to expect things to continue to funtion, BUT BOTH of these folks contend that their apps ARE 98SE compatible, so let's either PROVE that to be true by finding out how to install these apps on 98SE systems OR prove they aren't compatible in the first place. I suspect the latter since everyone has had to redo communications in XP since SP2 and it appears that THAT fix is NOT backward compatible.

    Thanks

Norton can be a real pain, and I swore by there programs! After hearing so much about conflicts with their Anti-Virus and firewall, I decided to try something new. Here at Major Geeks, alot where raving about Avast, so I decided to give it a try on my computer. Needless to say I m impressed with it, and would reccomend it to anyone. Even my son who SWEARS by Norton after seeing it run on my computer (he's a real computer geek lol) took Norton off his and installed Avast. It's a free version and works as well as Nortons, and doesn't hog resorces like Nortons. If your interrested you can download it right here at: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download1968.html I think you will find it works rather well. Oh, and be prepared, it also talks to you. Really a great program. :)

I have Win98se and I've loaded and run AVG Free (the 7.0 version) and I don't seem to have a problem. I'm not running Norton so I can't help you there, but I'm pretty sure that running two antivirus programs causes conflicts. There are ways to do it. I'm sure someone here knows how to configure them to run together, but what you end up with is one antivirus runs all the time as the default antivirus and ther other has to be run manually. AVG Free does work in win98 but not if norton is running as you primary antivirus. For some reason these antivirus companies can't seem to write their software to work with each other. Try uninstalling one of them and only running the other one and see if that helps.:)

Yes I have and am sticking with Win98SE...I have had it since it was first released on BETA!!! Too many unproved systems out there today!!!

I have just rebuilt 2 computers for my home...one for me and one for the boys!!!
Talk about a 2 month project, by myself!!!

Now that all is updated and so on...
I have really come up with a good problem, that I cannot even fix thru all the help I have tried on this site!!!

Seems, that after I added a Linksys wireless router and a wireless adapter, Linksys...
    OR
After removing some spyware like (Cydoor) ...
I now cannot connect via links or URLS to MY McAfee service, besides the fact that the McAfee stuff will not work, along with a few other links like Intellcast weather, and a couple others???

    I removed All McAfee stuff!!!
Loaded free AVG AntiVirus from this site and found a free McAfee Firewall for 30 days!!!
So I am protected for now!!!

    Anyone have any ideas???

Majorgeeks has a freeware firwall in their software lists that will take over when your mcafee runs out. As far as the links problems you may have other spyware that you haven't detected yet. What are you running for spyware removal?
Spybot S&D, and Ad-Aware SE personnal are both free and seem to work pretty good. A lot of people are using HiJackthis, and there are some people here that know how to use it. I have been lucky so far and haven't needed it, so I can't tell you how to use it.:)

    Thanks for the reply...
Using NoAdware, PC Bug Doctor, Windows Registry and Spy Bouncer...
They all find something the others do not find???

I'm not really sure, I use AdAware personnally and it seems to keep up with the times pretty good. I've used Spybot in the past but I ran into problems running them together they like to detect each others quarantine lists and say you've got more spyware. then those lists just bounce back and forth until you adjust some settings. The problem is no one or two spyware catcher's will catch all the spyware out there. So it's a good idea to keep up with the forums and read into the sticky's at the beginning of each category.:)

i have bothe systems on the same drive.
They work fine and all is compatible from xp. from 98 i have a problem, msi files are chineses to it( no offense)

Norton systemworks works fine from XP. But i did not install it from xp need more drive space. workd from 98 drive though.
so.... I cam here.... looking for partioner progggie link and BAM.
    I became a doctor.

Xp will work fine as long as you have partioned drives set at NFS format, USe your FAT 32 drive (separate from systems 98 drive) for programs that will shared, and games on a totally separte drive (another physical drive) since they require a lot of space and dynamic access. if you want to play from both, I suggest fat32 for that drive. or if you only use from Xp NFS.
Your swap file, however should be on a separtae drive for BOTH programs, since they move alot od shit in and out all day long. I use fat32 for this.
it doesnt matter, since Xp is bilingual.
So NSW can run at anytime I deem.

    Cheers.

tinkertoy: You might want to open a new thread of your own for the questions you have rather than jump into V91138s thread as it is two totally different problems here. That way you both can get the help you need.
