    Hi all
I have had help here before- thanks you are sure experts.
    I have Windows 2000Professsional Service Pack 4 build 2195
    CPU is AMD 1GHZ
    RAM 851
Current problem is that my drive 'G' - a partition of the hard drive has vanished and not listed when looking in the 'My Computer' directory.
But , also when I click on the address bar on 'Control Panel', the 'puter hangs up and goes nowhere. The CPU shoots to 100% and shows 'not responding' on task manager.
This also occurs when trying to change drives n software like Excel.
Also when rebooting the puter runs chkdisk on G, but then carries on to start- even though G is not there.
I have run all manner of software stuff, Advanced System Cre seemed to do a lot and speeded up puter , but the G is mssing. The web works fine and this is odd. This puter takes ages to load- 5 iutes at least. I do not like the Professional.
Any ideas ?, id s I loved to hear them
Thanks folks- puters are so frustrating , but necessary

    Hi Henry.

Get to a command prompt and type
    Code:
    chkdsk /r/f
    And hit ENTER

Then follow the prompt to reboot and do so.

This will run a check for any bad sectors etc. and recover anything it can.

It may take a while so grab a brew and get cumfy.

Let us know the situation once this has finished and you have rebooted.

    :)

Thanks for the reply, sorry I have taken a while to run it.
I did as you said and it did take awhile, no problems.
The 'look' of my sceen has changed and the 'G' drive letter is back- great.
But I am afraid it has made no improveent to function of the computer.
In Excel, I try to change the drive to save to, and it says- no permission to access 'G'. Well ,I am the administrator, and user. S** the Windows Professional,.
The computer still spikes to 100% cpu when I hit the change directory key- in the Control Panel, or Excel. But the computer works ok with the internet and in 'C'. chkdsk said 'c' was healthy.
Any more suggestions, it just came on - as these do - out of the blue
    Thanks again

You can also do a chkdsk on G: from within Windows to make sure it is OK.
My Computer>right click G:>select Properties>Tools tab>Check drive for Errors>Tick both boxes and let it run.

If you still get a permissions issue when trying to write a file to G: you will have to add your username under the security tab. But one thing at a time.

    Hi all
    Thanks for suggestions.
No, I am not bothered too much about 'G', but memory sticks are ignored too. That means I cannot save work away from this machine.

Sach2- when I do what you suggest, from in My Computer, eventually, I get a message saying
    "error performing inpage operation"
    G:\ is not available.
So I am no further forward but have at least tried these ideas ot. I suppose this machine is getting on a bit now, but only 7 years old.
    Thanks all the same

Thanks for the suggestions. In the end I removed the second HD from the computer- which was G- and this has enabled the rest of the computer to work perfectly. So any files on G are gone, but there was not much there anyway.
I presume that the HD has physically failed in some way.
