Well my nightmares are coming true. I thought it would be fun and cute to add a modification to the boot screen so it appeared as "homer edition"

It just made my day horrific. It swapped out the ntoskrnl.exe and put in the new one that should have made it work.... it didnt.

After 5 hours of battling and trying to get XP to start again.... I caved and re-installed windows XP. I didnt reformat because I did not want to lose my research and homework (because I am not the smartest for not backing it up).

My problem lies here-in. Reloading XP worked in getting me in but I had to create a new log in. I did not create this one with a password. My last account did.

C:\Documents and Settings\WX Junkie is the folder I have access to now for just creating...

C:\Documents and Settings\Samuel is the one that has everything in it. It is still there... but when i logged on in the past, that account had a password. I cannot find any place that will let me put in my password so i can get in and I am going mad trying to get in...

Is there anything I can do? Or am I SOL and going to have to lose all of my data in those folders?

Good call Alan, taking ownership should rectify that issue :)

slightly off topic but same subject
One thing to remember when using XP and NTFS is that passwords and EFS keys should always be backed up, more the EFS keys, if you have encrypted data and for some reason have to format and re-install XP... and don't have your private key or a DRA key then, that data is near impossible to recover.

    just some info.......

If you use passwords to gain access at boot time then you can back this up using the Forgotten Passwords Wizard ( but you need to know your password to run this utility as its a preventative task ) Goto Control Panel > User Accounts > click the account you want to create a recovery disk for then and at top left you will see "Prevent a Forgotten Password" > just follow the on screen prompts, you will need a formatted floppy disk.

for EFS troubles and backing up EFS key then these pages are of help.....
