lost at sea

I hesitate to ask this, but here goes. I have installed PCLos2007 and have been struggling to try and deal with it. I give up. I have tried, but it is just not for me. I am not interested in any more Linux systems. I used Win98se for years-perhaps my confusion stems from this.
At this point all I want to do is get Linux off my system and go with 98se. I am not adept at messing about in hard drive partitions, but have at least found my way in. Following is what I am seeing:
Filesystem Types: EX2 JournalisedFS Swap Windows Other Empty

    hdb
    / Swap / home

    7.8GB 3.9GB 62GB

This is a basic tower-80GB western digital hard drive, ATI motherboard, 512mb memory. Originally came with Ubuntu Feisty Fawn which I found to be impossible to make work with dial up. PCLos installed fine, then had some odd problem, but once again installed for me. I have made copies of what little I wanted to save, so am ready to plunge ahead. After you all quit rolling your eyes, perhaps you could point me in the right direction. Any help would be appreciated. And no, I am not interested in XP. Thanks in advance...

Hmmmmm, what troubles did you have with dialup? Seems the issue is not the OS as much as you removed three tires to cause the flat to be level with the others.

Where are you from, and who installed Ubuntu on the system?

    :)

You can download something like DBAN http://dban.sourceforge.net/
and wipe the 80GB hard drive clean but then you have to boot a live linux CD in order to format the drive to install windows.
The fdisk in 98SE will not work on drives larger than 32GB so you can not fdisk and format using a 98 boot floppy

Also, there might not be 98SE drivers for the newer components of the computer you have. Specifically, no video, no audio, no modem.

And as you know 98SE is not plug and play with any USB devices so any thumb drives you buy, you need to determine if the manufacturer still supplies 98SE drivers for download on the website.
(I ran 98SE for many years and I had a next to impossible task getting an external enclosure recognized.

Personally, I don't think, as much as you want to install it, that 98SE is going to work on a new computer. Good luck.

Thanks-I just wrote a reply, but was told i am not logged in, even though it says I am. That's it-I give up.

Been a bad morning so far-will try wiping the drive-thanks plodr. It may not work, but at this point the old Pentium II is looking very good. The level of confusion I am having with this OS is roughly equivalent to not having a computer at all. I do not have any USB devices other than a very basic camera which works fine with 98se.
Bored-nice metaphor with the tires. This thing came pre-loaded with Ubuntu, but found out the hard way about serial modems and bandwidth on dial up. People on ubuntu forums told me I was wasting my time trying to run on dial up. Poked around and found PCLos-billed as being pretty basic(I am not so sure about that!), so got a copy from OnDisc. Ran live for a bit, seemed to be doable, so installed it to hard drive, letting the "Wizard" do its thing. Which removed Ubuntu, not a loss to me.
I have looked at the partitions, obviously, but have never mucked about in there. Seemed akin to poking a stick at a tiger.
But I can't make sense of a lot of the things I see. Can't find any reference to the floppy drive that is installed on the tower-my saved things are all on floppies, so that is a problem right off the bat. I sense that perhaps there is TOO MUCH choice, and perhaps this is the crux of the problem for me. I prefer radios with real knobs on them, so that probably sums it up right there. No doubt I ran 98se for too long and am perhaps stuck in a time warp or some such.
I will slog along with this for a bit, but I have a feeling this tower will wind up in a closet soon, gathering dust. Thanks for your input-both of you.

Do you still have your 98SE computer? If so, use it for the programs you are used to using. If you can get online (dialup is extremely hard to figure out in linux) then just use the current distro for safe surfing using FF and don't do any wiping yet.

Do you know what modem is in the computer? I will ask around to find out what distro works with your modem.

Mandriva.1 Spring is very good BUT I do not know how it does dialup.

Hold off doing anything else to your newest computer.

About 15 hours later and I have a possibility. Dapper Drake, which is Ubuntu 6.04 worked for someone using linux on dialup. He did not have much success with the latest version of Ubuntu.
Does your computer have a port for an external serial modem? Someone said, PCLinux, which you have installed will work with an external modem.
Personally, I had an old notebook running 98SE and trying live linux distros. I was able to use a USR external serial modem to get that notebook online.

Hey Plodr, thank you so much for taking the time to dig around concerning this. Something Bored Out Of said, the bit about the tires, bothered me. Spent the day yesterday mowing grass, fiddling with the computer, working on a log shovel, fiddling with the computer....BINGO!!
I am no techie, but I repair heavy equipment for a living, and one of my mantras is to always go for the stupidest possibility first-saves time, and most often turns out to be the cure. Turns out the partitions were not correctly set, nor were they in the recommended order. Took me three tries to get it correct(I've never done that before), but the darned thing loaded correctly. Woohoo.
This is an entirely different machine now. I have no concise explanation, but my hunch is that when the original install of PCLos supposedly removed Ubuntu it must not have completely done it. Or perhaps the Ubuntu partitions were just occupied by PCLos as it was. Something was out of synch. I have access to things I never could get to open or work before, such as Konqueror, and this thing is waaaaay faster than before. Still have not found the floppy drive, but the screen text sizes are no longer miniscule. So...I am going to play for a bit, get my feet wet and see what this thing is all about.
Oh, the modem is an external, a cheap Actiontec, serial port setup. Works fine. I am sure there are probably better units out there, but hey, I'm easy.
Thanks again-no doubt I will have more questions along the way, but hopefully they will not be so involved. You folks take care.

danfixer, send me a PM (personal message). PMs are turned off so I can not send a message to you.
I'm not clear which distro you are running Ubunto or PCLinux? It really doesn't matter, as long as it works and you can get online. We'll get the floppy mounted so you can use that too.
