Lost Data in transfer from one Hd to other

I have a new Seagate 250 gig drive and I was transfering data from an old WD160 gig HD. The computer locked up and the transfer was stopped, I forget the error message. On restart many gigs of data just vanished from my newer HD.

Is this a problem with the hardrives or MOB. I had just done a fresh install of Sp1
and Sp2 updates, downloaded and updated all Major Geeks recomeded Spyware and update them and my virus software, so I should have had a real good running system.

Sometimes when I plug in my old WD 160 as a slave under my Seagate 200 gig drive on my ultra 100 card the WD does not show up, sometimes it does, so I am confused on whether the drive is going bad, or there is a problem with the MOB. I have had a number of lockups over the years and had to shut down the computer with the power button. (I know ) I am running a recovery NTFS program on another computer to try to regather any data that is there to recover. Thats it , I did do a search. any help would be great.

Well in the first instance have you run the WD HD through the manufacturers diagnostics programs.

Need a little more info in respect of your overall set up ie list full specs and similarly for HDs ie what kind, how connected.

    Cheers

Ok here is what I found out, the Seagate 250 gig baracuda drive is refurbished. On each boot xp automatically does scan disc on it and recovers orphaned files.

I have and Biostar MOB with athlon xp 2200 processor, and ultra ata 100 card that came with my WD 160 gig drive supporting it and my Seagate 250 gig, I was transfering data to the 160 and did a reformated my 250, because of the problems, I thought maybe that would clean things up. When I went back to transfer data, some of my cd collection ripped with EAC disapeared.

I am disabled and cant have the hobbies outside that I once had so music is an escape. I lost everthing starting Q through Z. I lost all my Beatles, Police, Stones, Who, Yes, Robert Plant, Stevie Ray Vaugh, Strokes, White stripes, Verve Pipe, Tons of stuff.

I have tried stellar phoenix to recover and it locks up and windows gives me an error and it shuts down. So if there is another program or technique that might help get just some of this music back would be a great help.

Enough Crying. I am glad this forum is still here I tell people about it all the time and direct them to the directions and programs for spyware and virus removal, it has been a great help to me.

    Thanks in advance:eek:

Are you sure the jumpers are correct on both drives? Can you set them both for Cable Select and make the 250GB drive DRIVE 1.

Dorian G, in the first instance I am also in agreement with jconstan to confirm that the drives are jumpered correctly.

Subsequent to that, I take it from the info provided that all the HDDs are PATA. Is the WD 160Gb just used for data or is it bootable, ie does it have an o/s on it. The reason I ask is because if you have 2 drives 'visible' with o/s on them, I think that this could create the kind of corruption you are talking about.

In the first instance, I would check these 2 points.

I would also go to the manufacturers site and download the HD diagnostics program. These usually run on a floppy and by way of dos.

How are the HDDs connected ie are these both on one controller as primary and slave or 2 separate controllers as primaries.

Post after you can confirm how the drives are connected ie which ATA controller and how. Check jumper setting and confirm the composition of the WD HD ie data or bootable.

Then you can run the diagnostics program on the WD.

There is a spectrum of other components that could create the problems which you are experiencing to include, faulty ATA controller on the mobo, faulty ribbon cable which connects your drive to the mobo...(another thought, are you connecting your drive(s) to the mobo via a 40 stand ribbon cable or an 80 strand...if 80 strand, that lead has a blue, black and grey plug and the blue one ie the lone one, should go into the ATA controller on the mobo)........The southbridge on your mobo could also have issue...

    Let us know

    Cheers

Check your power leads as I have had trouble like this where a drive is recognised then not and computer freezes or BSOD. Choose a power lead that you know is definetely A OK like a rom lead. These wires are really not very good for ATA HD's, with several movements they can become quite loose, female conector can open out slightly or even retract which is enough to loose all power to the HD.

    Ok Thanks many good tips.

Both Drives are extra storage on one 80 strand cable, One is master the other slave, jumpers are set ok, the problem, did happen when I was transfering data from one to the other.

I just got sick of not recovering any data from the Seagate 250 so I did a zero write to the drive and re-formated it. I loaded up about 50 gig of data and nothing has happened so far, I do feel a little vibration in the drive when it accesses. I have not re-connected the WD 160 so as not to loose any more data untill I figure out which is the problem. I think I need to get another cable and put them on seperate inputs on the ata 100 controler.

I hope that fills in some questions.

Yes I have all the diagnostics for both drive, I have run on the Seagate and got nothing, also nothing from scandisc, I will run WD diagnostics before I return.

    Thanks

Thinking out aloud but do you also get the same issue with the 200Gb Seagate.

What HD do you boot from, is it the Seagate 200Gb..?

Reason I ask is because the bios in you mobo may not allow for 48bit LBA ie it may not be able to handle drives larger than 160Gb. This is probably unlikely since most mobos made in the last 4-5 years will be 48bit LBA enabled....

    http://www.48bitlba.com/

Post back after you have changed the HDD connector...That could be the issue...

    Good luck

Ok Guys I think we got it, I found a ata 100 card locally and changed it and now my new xp install sees the 160 WD and the 200 Seagate, they are both added storage, my OP system is on a 40 gig Seagate. I did not know that card would keep a system from starting up, and also corrupt and loose data. thanks for your help

now another question I noticed that my new install of xp sp2 is not on the very inside of the drive it is about 1/8 to 1/4 of the way in. Is there a way to move the green system files to front part of the drive so they spin up faster. I have had some system lockups. I have been updating windows defender, spbot, and all recomeded spyware tools, and my system froze up once.

Any way thanks for saving my music and not having to buy a MOB.
