When I last used a microdrive USB to download software via my Drive G:, I removed the drive without following removal instructions. Now my G drive has disappeared. I have lost/misplaced the original installation CD. How can I reinstall the Drive G: hardware without that CD?

    Hi
Am not quite sure what you are trying to do. If you are using Windows XP it is relatively easy to reinstall the drive without any CD. Am I correct in assuming that the microdrive USB is the drive G?
Does the drive G return when you reinsert the microdrive into the USB port? If not then go into the Control Panel and into SYSTEM. Then go into HARDWARE and click on DEVICE MANAGER. This will show everything installed on your computer. Then click onto DISC DRIVES and this will bring up all the drives that are installed. If drive G is there then right click on it and uninstall. Then plug the drive G into the USB port and the computer should pick it up automatically and reinstall for you.
Please if I am on the wrong track let me know.
    Good luck

Was the USB microdrive given the letter G? When you remove a USB drive, the drive letter disappears. If you want to use it again, plug it in and windows will give it a letter again (it might not always be G depending what else is plugged in). Almost all USB devices are plug n play in XP. That means, you do not need a CD. I suspect the CD had drivers for 98SE on it or maybe even some special software that you don't need to be able to use the microdrive.

There's a large chance that you won't remember any of the answers to these questions, but:
    1. Was the light still blinking on your drive when you removed it?
    2. Did it feel (excessively) hot when you removed it?
    3. Was there any burnt smell?

I was dumb once and I unplugged it when it was still blinking. And that was when USB drives were pretty new and it cost like $50 for 256MB.

Also, check your drive management. Sometimes, there are drives in there that aren't assigned a drive letter.

That's My Computer->Manage, then click on Disk Management under Storage. That'll show you all of your drives. If there's one with no letter next to it you could assign a letter to it.
