I'm at a loss as to what to do with my computer. I spend as much time tinkering and repairing a mutltude of glitches and problems, because I chare this one with the rest of my family. My current problem is this. I recently installed a Rosewill RD-162 16x DVD Burner, everything was working and I should have left it at that. However, I went to the rosewill.com site and did some research and decided to install the latest firmware. There was a glitch in the update, and like dummy I restarted when it said to. The update failed after it erased the old firmware. Now win98se doesn't detect the drive and my asus bios detects it as [RICOH PLoader]. The question I have is, is there an utility somewhere that can help me restore the firmware or cause windows 98 to detect the drive so I can use the firmware installation utility form the manufacturer. I believe Rosewill DVD Burners are the same as AOpen ones.

Typically, websites post the original BIOS for just this reason. Go back and see if they offer the original BIOS and simply flash it back to original.

General rule of thumb for you with BIOS. If its working fine, or your issues are not addressed in the latest BIOS fix, do not get it. It will not help you in any other way and only cause problems.

Hope this works out, let us know.

Here's the problem I went to the Rosewill.com site and the only download they offer for the drive is the firmware update(installation utility) this utility doesn't work in DOS so I have to run it through Windows. They don't provide any utilities for problems that might arrise if these installations go bad. I can easily solve my problem by returning the drive in exchange for the new one, but I was hoping someone might know of a utiliy that will force windows to detect this drive or that might give me access to the drive with firmware utiliy in DOS. I can get the drive replaced I just was hoping I could do it myself without having to spend time shipping the drive back to the retailer and waiting for them to repair or replace it.:)

The Roswill is a Ricoh OEM drive.

Look at the following thread for information on how to manually flash the drive, and where to get the flashing SW.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks! While it didn't help me directly, it did give me a source to find what I need. I signed up and posted a thread and if someone can help me before I mail the drive tomorrow, it'll save me the time and hassle of having to send the drive back.:D

All you have to do is un install the DVD drive. Then reinstall it. I have the same drive and thats all I had to do. Right click on my computer then select properties. Open device manager under Hardware. Find the DVD drives. Two of them will show up. Click on the un install icon for both. Then remove the ide and power cable of the DVD drive. Then turn off the computer. Once the computer is off reinstall the drive and boot your computer. It will then find and load the drivers. Click continue installation when the windows warning comes up. Your drive will show up and work like new.

    Hi All,
I have the same drive, except that my problem is not with the firmware.
I get this error when I try to install programs. It will launch but take a
long time, before the auto run kick in and then I will get this error.

"Welcome to Windows NT has encountered a problem
and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

    "EventType: InPageError P1: c0000185 P2: 00000005"

    "C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER7b60.dir00\SETUP.EXE.mdmp"
    "C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER7b60.dir00\appcompat.txt"

I am having problem before and after I updated the firmware.
I unistall the drive, unplug the cable and power and reinstall
    it, same problem.

the weird thing is that it will install XP from a backup cd and install
some application but refuse to install from some other cds like the
one that come with the drive, nero 6 and other programs. it installed
the power DVD after a few tries that involve a shutdown for a few
    minutes.

    Specs:
    SATA hard drive.
DVD drive set as slave on second IDE.
    No other IDE devices.
(hardware is all new. a day old.)
OS is XP service pack 2 (fresh install)

I thought the drive might just be bad,
or it could be it does not like some media.
I did not think it's the driver or anything or the firmware,
cause have not come across anyone with the same problem as mine.
    any thought? anyone?

Also someone mentioned that the Rosewill drive is a Ricoh OEM,
anyone can tell me which model of the Ricoh is it?

    Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to the forums!

You should have a utility in Control panel that will allow you to do this. I believe it is a disk clean utility or something. Or if you have already phisically removed the drive XP should automatically remove the driver. If it doesn't the way I do it in 98 is to boot to safe mode and manually remove it from Device Manager.

That is what I did. I got an RMA and had them replace it. This time I haven't done the update. If windows can't detect it then the firmware is probably corrupt. I reported the problem to Rosewill and they said they would let thier engineers know obout this problem to see if they could get a fix for it. But, in the meantime I had to send mine back. The drive works great though. Fast and quiet.:)

Im having the same problem with my aopen12x dvd burner. was working fine, now when i re boot it detects RICOH_ploader2_regulus. I can clear the bios or boot w/o the drive connected. it will detect the drive correctly until i reboot. then the drive quit working. tried hacking the registry, won't let me delete the listing.

I'm having the same problem tierray had, I tried to flash the firmware for my memorex mp5125a and now I can not access it at all it is not in my computer and I cant remove it from the device manager because as far as windows is concerned there is no drive. the light stays on the whole time too and the eject button does not work. I used rflash to flash it and I used a ricoh firmware, any help with this would be greatly apprecieated.
    Thank You
    Benjamin
