I stupidly lost my password for an encrypted file, I used Ghostsurf Vault to store it, I have the backups on DVD and a vague idea of the sort of passwords I would have chosen...anything I can do? I thought to use Hash Suite but for non techies its not an easy program to use. Ideas anyone?

If you have the recovery CD I would suggest using that as it will de-encrypt the file, right?

'fraid not. Its just a cd backup of the encrypted files, ghostfurf will restore to the vault but only with a password...which I forgot!(I know!) I have a file called idx.pv which probably has the password key but of course I cant read it. So I am stuck. Hence the need to crack the password somehow. Long shot I know.

Unfortunately I can't think of any legal way of doing it apart from you testing the passwords you think you know.

I know its tricky. Nothing illegal though, its my file!

I do believe you, but I must follow the rules here and advocating illegal options is against the rules. Sorry!

I quite understand. A tutorial for Hash suite would help if anyone knows it. And that isnt illegal I dont think.
