Lost encryption software - please HELP!

The hard disk in my Dell PC (5 yrs old) running Win ME crashed. My data is backed up, but some important files were encrypted using a program I've lost. And, despite my efforts, I cannot remember the name of the encryption program.

I very much need to unencrypt these files, if possible, and do it without sharing the contents with a commercial service that might be able to open them.

The only other clues to the program I can offer are -
    * Type is listed as "FSM file".
    * Filename stays the same, but ".fsm" is appended when encrypted.
    * The program was freeware back when I started using it, probably about 2001, and always performed without a hitch.
    * Last time I checked, probably 18 months ago, there wasn't an XP version (at least for free), so I always ran it on my old ME-based machine.
    * I searched extension databases and google, but have come up empty thus far.

Anyone remember this program (ideally, got a copy to share!), or got any ideas how to crack the files?

    Thanks,
    Aardvark17

Thanks, but that is not it. My hope was that another 'old-timer' would have the software lurking on an older system, but seems it is not to be.

    Sigh.

    Found this thread via google.

I've got the same problem...just a few years later...

Have backuped HDDs of some late-1990ies-PCs before throwing them into bin. Now I checked the content of the disks and the most interesting files on it are encrypted and in the .fsm-format. As well as aardvark17 i could remember that I encrpted them, but not how the encryption-tool was called.

Can anybody help me out? I still have a Windows 98 installation-CD so if somebody had the programme, I would be able to installed it.

    Thanks!

Was the program, by any chance, XAP from GigaSpaces? There are instructions on the page I link to.

I've seen it posted as Farandole and Farandoyle so I don't know which is the correct old program.

    Go here http://www.fileinfo.com/extension/fsm
click the link for the MODPlug Player and you might be able to open the file (use a copy and not the original just in case it is not .fsm associated with the music program).

An Interplay Game, Freespace Mission also uses fsm file extension
