Lost files in windows xp

I lost a few files in window xp home edition on both of my computers. I was having problems when my systems upgraded to wmp11. I restored my systems to wmp10 however, since then I lost at least 2 of my excel files. I cannot find any backup on my computer. This has occurred on both of my computers and the same files are missing. Is there anyway I can find these spreadsheets? I used search, and tried to find the system backup. I don't know if I was on the right track or are these gone forever? The above is the only thing I have done. I would be most appreciative for any help or ideas of how I can restore these files.

Do a search for .xls files, see if you find anything.

Do you remember if you had the feature below checked?

Restore a file from a backup Excel creates backup files in the same folder as the original file, and names them based on the original file name and extension .xlk. For example, if the original file is Budget.xls, the backup file is Backup of budget.xlk.

To open a backup file, click Open on the File menu, make sure Files of type is All Microsoft Excel Files, and then locate and double-click the backup file you want.

Use one of the free undelete tools available right here from 'The Geeks'. Just check in the Data Recovery section. I recommend Restoration 'cuz you can enter the file name(s) you're looking for. Be sure to create a new folder to put the recovered files in; preferably on a different hard drive (a slave or external drive) or on a USB thumb drive....
