lost icons after installing iobit and security updates

I installed Iobit Adv care and Iobit 360 on a compaq presario - win xp home ed. Ran both programs including the security upgrades 360 suggested. When I rebooted all the icons were gone. Only thing showing was background and pointer. right clicking on screen did not bring up any menu. no start button, nothing. Am able to bring up task manager. tried bringing up Win in safe mode but when offered to run sys restore, the program did not run. Any ideas :confused

When you booted into Safe Mode, were your desktop and taskbar icons visible? Also, what OS and antivirus versions are you running?

no icons or task bar in safe mode. OS is WIN XP Home not sure of the anti virus. laptop is not mine. I did see a norton folder but not sure if it is the antivirus

Apparently, there are many causes for this problem, most notably the F-Nimda virus and buggy versions of PC-Cillin Internet Security...

Look in the process list for 'bxomebc' - it's a sure sign you've got F-Nimda if those letters show up: http://www.computing.net/process/bxomebc ...if so, you may be able to root out the virus manually with this tool: http://www.pcrepaircentral.com/removal/fsnimda3.zip ...

If you can find anything relating to Trend Micro or PC-Cillin, try deleting them to see if that changes anything...you might also try uninstalling iobit, since that's when your problems started...
