Lost Illustrator

I just reloded XP-Pro on a new hard drive and when I tried to load my Illustrator program I got a (error 5006:0x80070017) .
I checked the error code and it suggested I call Adobe, they asked for my key number and told me I had bad a bad number wanted to know if I had a proof of purchase of which I don't because I bought it in Chicago over 9 years ago then moved to Florida and then to So Cal 7 years ago.
I have rebuilt my machine a couple of times and never had any trouble with it loading the Illustrator program but at sometime when I logged on to Adobe site they must of copied somethimg on my desktop or the disk.
I have a really old laptop with the program that runs on it OK and wonder if I can hook the two together and run it on the desktop or if the error will lock it out.The laptop isn't on the internet.
Is their anything that I can do to circuvent what they did to my machine or disk.
I am hoping to find a resolution to this problem because at 82 I don't want to buy a new software.

If you are installing Illustrator from a CD, the CD may be bad. Also, try deleting everything in your Windows temp directory.

 

Is it possiable to hook up the laptop to the desktop and run the program from there?
