have spent the entire weekend attempting to correct this issue, so it's a long story. bear with me.
tried my luck at -help on the net tech guy- here's a list of what i ran through:
    new version of hijack this.
    ewido scan
    killbox
    apropos
all required multiple tasks including reboot in safe mode. after completing the above i discovered stuff quit working and had to restore and start all over again. this time the engine for synamntec was gone and was left with no virus protection so i removed symantec and downloaded McAfee from msn. i guess it doesn't run automatically. anyway the original problem of RED X's still exists and can't download macromediaflash or sites with flash content. have enabled everything except the kitchen sink in my internet options menu and still can't even play the videos on the volkswagen website.
    i have a dell 8200 2ghz, P4, 768 mem, 120gb hard drive. MSN and Cox high speed.
any ideas out there?? i'm ready to shoot the thing.

my guess is that since i haven't crashed yet, things must be okay. probably at least a little cleaner after using Major Geeks easy cleaner. still not able to get rid of the red x's or use flash content. if it doesn't happen in the next couple of hours will have to try it again next week i guess. get home at 7:30 and get up at 3:00 so have just enough time to eat shower and sleep.

You need to describe the actual problem, not everyone has read your other posts.

problem is: cannot download macromedia flash and/or view flash content. also get red x's in a box at the top left corner of multiple mundane websites, including MSN. removed norton from my hard drive and installed McAfee. removed every spy program i had except ad aware, guess that's next. i don't know??? tried msn article 283807 still no dice. msn tech support claims it's an issue with internet explorer which they do not support and i should go to dell or microsoft. now there's a happy thought A. i'm not trying to visit porn sites or any secured sites, just normal company websites that use flash for active content. got a human once at adobe and he said it was an issue with microsoft. go figure.

I know you have XP but is it fully upto date, eg. SP2 etc?

If the MSN browser your using then try plain old IE or another browser to narrow down the cause ( Firefox or Opera are good ).

Red X's .... Check that everything is checked in IE > Tools > Internet Options > Advanced under Multimedia, apart from Show Image Download Placeholders... actually a good idea would be to click Restore Defaults at the same location ( button bottom right corner )

What security software are you using?
    Antivirus = McAfee
    Firewall =
Antispyware = Ad-Aware ( but any others installed still )

Have you cleared out all your temp files .. CCleaner ( free ) is good for this, also run the Issues scan as you may have some old registry links left still from the uninstallation of the security apps.. could be blocking a setting.

Try this for Macromedia Flash.. first uninstall it if its actually present in Add/Remove then even if not use the uninstaller util http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/installers/8/uninstall_flash_player.exe then goto the Actual Flash Player install site ( sometimes if you havnt got MacFlash installed the site you visit trys via its link to install the app ) http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash

I had the same problem….I think I fixed, by removing the ms java program, and installing the SunJava…….then started with a new download of Macromedia flash…..wobbles
