Lost Internet Connection

Not sure what happened to start this. I believe it is related to running an anti-virus program...system tried to reboot but couldn't. I used an old restore point and seem to have everything back; except internet.

Computer is an HP media Center running windows XP.

Internet configuration was cable modem, through router, wired ethernet connection to the router. The ethernet connection was part of the motherboard, not an add on card.

Thought maybe I was having a hardware issue; so got a working wireless card and tried to set it up; but have the same trouble.

When I look at my Network Connection, it shows that it is Acquiring Network address. If I check status of the connection; it shows
Address type: Invalid IP Address
IP Address: 0.0.0.0
Subnet Mask: 0.0.0.0
Default Gateway:

If I chose the option to Repair the connection...It gets to the step where it is "Renewing your IP address" and it never completes.

Somewhere along the line, I ran into a friend that suggested I re-install Service Pack 3. But that will not re-install because it says acpi.sys is running.

 

I'm no expert but what worked for me on my xp was start>run> type cmd and when black window opens type ipconfig/renew

 

Jim, I just tried your quick fix (for a similar problem I posted a couple of days ago) and got the following response:

"An error occurred while renewing interface wireless network connection: An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket."

I don't have a clue what that means.

 

ipconfig / renew was giving me an error...

I eventually gave up and took it out of automatic and forced an address. Up and running now.
