Ok, I "think" (??) my problem (in suddenly not being able to access/connect to the internet) when I switched from Sygate FW to Comodo FW, was where I selected the 'Change the DNS Routing' option (or whatever it's called) in Comodo, and I had already done that with "Open DNS" ... does this sound like what could be blocking my internet connection, please - and if so, how would I reverse that change please?

Also, it appears Comodo starts in "Safe" Mode, it seems to me that most people (that I) might prefer to utilize "Training" Mode, for awhile, correct?

    Thanks in advance,
    g...

    Thanks for the reply ...

I only turned Sygate 'Off' ("Exited" the program), as I "thought" it might be better to not completely uninstall it until the new FW program was up and running/performing satisfactorily (?)

So, I'm understanding that I should follow the procedure you have outlined?

PS ~ Actually, upon install of Comodo, I selected the 2nd (middle) option...I think it was called "Optimum" Protection (though not the "Full" Protect.), but I did follow the prompts carefully...

Well...I made it back to the net (and thank you very much for that!)...but wondering if I've screwed anything up here on this machine??

Specifically I suppose I'm wondering about having changed that DNS Option, as well as whether I should be in "Safe" (default) Mode or Training Mode, and I suppose also if I should just have the "Basic" Firewall only, or what Comodo calls: "Defense+ Security Level"?

Wow, I have a lot of questions, eh?

    Thanks again, and in advance

    Thanks again ;)

Can anyone possible clue-me-in on how this fellow here ("RickTaunton"), who had been assisting me in this thread with this issue just last evening, has suddenly vanished (??) seemingly - after barely a month of being here?

Please tell me this wasn't "DomLuc" again, or whoever THAT guy was (please?!)!? He also went-by another name at one point, but I will have to search way-back in my posts (a couple of years) to find his name then (and I will do that now)....

I had a few more questions, and am wondering, at the moment, if what he instructed me to do was best for my situation here, please?

Specifically, setting Comodo FW to "Safe" Mode seems a good bit more confusing for me, and I'm not the one who is going to be using the PC mentioned in the thread, but it is my 70 - yr-old mother, who is even MORE (MUCH more) clueless than I, when it comes to all of this stuff.

I mean, first-off he seemed to indicate/suggest that I should choose a; "a FW only build", but then went-on to say later; "Safe Mode for both FW and Defense + are the most sensible options and 'Pro Active Security' for 'Configuration' is the safest." ~~~ hence, I am confused here gang...

    Thanks in advance,
    g......

PS ~~ It was "MarkTrent" ... that's the name, and I'm wondering if THIS person ("RickTaunton"), could be THAT person, please? (because for whatever reason, MarkTrent (AKA: "DomLuc")LOATHED me, and seemed as much to want to confuse, discourage, and denigrate me, as he did to offer any help.

    Glenn here's a link.
Credits to Chiron, a regular on Comodo's forums.

Read the comments, as there was a slight correction. Haven't used Comodo for quite a while- and am posting from a Mac, so can't offer advice as I have no real time navigation.

If the net is fine, it's up to you.
    From CMD > ipconfig /all
If the DNS servers are as below then you're on Comodo's
    156.154.70.22
    156.154.71.22

The above was in the set up to choose or not to.
A link on how to get them back to a DNS of your choice. (Hope comodo plays:-D)

I'm sure a MG CFW user here will have more inputs. I'll give CFW a run on a Vista machine tomorrow.
Getting late here now. I'm sure this will get sorted out while I'm asleep LOL

    cheers..

    Thank you sikvik.

Question # 1 (please): When I attempt to run ipconfig /all, the CMD window opens for about one second, and then disappears (closes). How might I be able to repair that please (so the window will stay open until I close it)?

    Thanks again, and in advance......

    On XP right?

Start> Run> type CMD click ok.
Once in CMD type ipconfig /all

Yes, those are Comodo's. If you like you can revert to Open DNS you used earlier.
These are the primary/preferred and secondary/alternate.
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
Enter the same as per DNS guide linked. Or you can google your ISP's DNS and use those.

Are you having any issues with the firewall?
    Cheers..

Thank you again very much ... I am now using Comodo (Free version) on both of my PC's (XP & Vista - both Home/Basic), and as far as I know there are no issues.

I've been doing a little bit of reading (uh-oh! lol/haha) and it seems if I choose or select the "correct" DNS Server, I may be able to increase my internet speed/performance (?), as well as making it all the more secure (??), well what's not to like about THAT? This sort of tweak has my name written all-over it!

I've been seeing some websites (
http://www.grc.com/dns/benchmark.htm & http://dnsbenchmarkanalyzer.com/ to name two) that may help with this ... are you (or is anyone here) familiar with any of them, please?

    Thanks again, and in advance......

A couple of OpenDNS links that I saved that you may find useful:

    What is Dynamic DNS

    Dynamic IP: General Info.

    ipconfig /?

This will display the usage syntax and optional parameters that are available.
I hardly ever use it and know little about it, but it's good to know how to get a little instant help.

    Good job:)
I've used open, google's and my ISP's. No determinable performance improvement for me. But some people swear by them.
Not familiar with those sites. Hope some one will pop in and shed some light.

    Cheers..

Ok, very good - thank you for that and for all of your assistance here.

By the way, it seems that one of those links/sites (I think it was
http://dnsbenchmarkanalyzer.com/ ) will search/analyze all or most the best known servers and recommend the best for a particular situation/location.

I think I'm going to give it a try......

Will report back in a new thread if anything "Good" (or BAD!!!) occurs!

    Thanks again......

    You're quite welcome. :)
I wish I had a better understanding of DNS issues.

I see that you have not received any response to your 'RickTaunton' questions.

I'm also curious about that. :confused
He and I both posted in another thread but only my quotes of his comments remain:
Just thought I'd mention that. Otherwise, I'll leave it alone.
