I am running Windows 98se on an old Compaq Desktop. It works fine for surfing the net.
Recently I defragged using the program which is in-computer....I guess it came with Win 98. Shortly after that I installed Irfanview, a program for viewing photos. Thereafter I discovered that about half of my dance videos on Windows Media Player cannot be viewed. Would it have been the defrag? If so, can I reverse this? Advice greatly appreciated......!

No, it isn't the defrag. When you installed Irfanview, it took over the file extension of dance videos. You need to go back into Irfan's setup, look thru the extensions and uncheck the ones that you want to view in WMP. (Options/Set file associations then the extensions tab and scroll down to mpeg4).
Word of caution: everytime you install a new audio or video program, you should look over all the extensions that it wants to handle. The safest way to install, is to uncheck everything then go back and check the items you'd like the new program to handle. (Burning software works the same way; if you install a few then the associations get all mixed up and things you expect to open in one program, don't open).

Thanks for your advice......however I already uninstalled Irfanview, and still approximately half the videos in my media library will not play. (just offhand I can't remember the message which comes up ).
Should I reinstall it and then do what you said ?????

I have a suggestion that may work because I had a similar situation.

Venture to the file you want to open. Right click on that file, and click on properties. Inside that pop up window, you'll see what program is used to open that file. What I did was just clicked on the "change" the program it opens with and direct it to what program opened it before.
