    Hallo

I am running Vista home premium SP2. I appear to have lost my desktop! My laptop boots normally, makes the correct sounds and I get the welcome screen, then it is blank. I tried to do a system restore, but it spent 3 hours saying it was finalising the file restore. I can get task manager by pressing ctrl-alt del, then go to files, but when I try to run a backup from disk, the message is that it cannot find a backup. The files are there. Is there anyway I can I can try a restore from command prompt or can anyone please suggest a solution? I do not have recovery discs.
