:( i have done a complete restore twice and I don't have my lightscribe dvd writer/cd writer. Even used my restore disks - no help - how do I retrieve this feature WITHOUT buying a new LIGHTSCRIBE DVD WRITER/: CD WRITER - COMPAQ wasn't much of a help either

    Hi:

Don't know if it would help but there is a LightScribe Diagnostic Utility you could try.
    http://www.lightscribe.com/downloadSection/windows/index.aspx?id=1106

I use LightScribe w/MCE2005/BenQ DW1655 Lightscribe DL/LightScribe base + Extended Label Contrast software/SureThing CD Labeller for LightScribe (free)/Nero v6(latest for burns only).

If it were me and the Diagnostic Util didn't fix it, I'd make sure I had the installers ready for the software I want to keep using and ...
In ADD/Remove programs remove any related software related to LightScribe.
Run CrapCleaner (free) >Issues >Scan and remove any junk left behind.
In Device Manager >Remove/Uninstall the (LightScribe) disc drive >Reboot and let XP redetect/reinstall the drive.

Then reinstall the software you previously removed.

Note: If it was an Ahead or Roxio software update that screwed your LightScribe, then you have other things to think about; ie if/when to uninstall/reinstall it and maybe go back to a previous version.

    Happy trailz,

I had the same thing happen. Remove the lightscribe burner. On the back their is a small plastic piece (I think it is called a jumper) that allows you to designate the unit as a slave or master. Install it on the "cable select" setting
(the non master or slave position.) and reinstall the unit. turn it on and in a sew seconds it should recognize the unit. If not check your BIOS. if it still does not work, something else is wrong. Hope this helps

You guys are jumping to conclusions way too fast.

He said he is missing the device. Yet a restore works.

    So....

Does the drive just not show in My Computer?

Does it show up in Device Manager, and if it does, is there an error code when you double click it?
