I have 6 computers running WXPProSP2 on an 8 port Linksys DSL/Router (not wireless) with verizon dsl. One of the computers suddenly showed little or no connection on the local area lan. Disabled McAffee and Windows firewall. Have tried ipconfig /release, ipconfig /renew, ipconfig /all, etc., but can't get it to respond. I tried moving the cable into one of the other ports on the router that I know works, but the same. I've tried manually configuring the IP and DNS servers, but nothing. I've downloaded all the various anti-virus softwares, including hijack this, but no spyware, ads, viruses or registry keys infected, through safe mode. The device manager shows the network adapter without problems, and my ipconfig /all shows it also. My next step is to reset my tcp/ip and flush the arp cache. Beyond that does anyone have any other ideas?

install a new NIC to see if your NIC is defective.

I'm assuming that you have replaced the cable.

Other than that, I would reconfigure my network card. Remove it from the device manager and start up windows. Let windows find it and install drivers for it. Should be pretty painless.
