Lost optical drives:

Reposted from my thread in the Hardware section, as I'm convinced that it's more of a driver problem:

A buddy dropped off a computer of his that was giving him trouble, asking me to take a look at it - I've done simple quick fixes involving networking and viruses/spyware in the past. I'll admit though, anything hardware or driver related, and I'm lost.

Here's the specs:
Dell Dimension 4100
PIII ~860
256 mb ram
Sony CD-RW CRX215E1
_NEC DV-5700A (Dvd)

Windows 2000 Pro

Neither optical drive appears in "My Computer".

In device manager, both the cd rom and optical drives are flagged with the yellow exclamation mark, which delves to the "Your registry might be corrupted. (Code 19)" message.

There is also a flag on a "PCI Device" under other devices ("The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)"). I have no idea what this is.

I've tried:
- uninstalling the device, and trying to let windows do it's thing upon reboot. It cannot find the proper driver for the PCI device (I doubt windows, like me, has any idea what it is, and I haven't opened the computer to check yet - I can do so when I get home). As for the optical drives, it searches for the drivers upon reboot, but they remain flagged in the device manager.

- uninstalling the device, physically unplugging the drives, then plugging them back in. Same problem.

- editing the registry values as listed here: http://support.dell.com/support/top...ument?dn=1065889&c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19#remove

- restoring setup defaults in the BIOS setup.
