Well I had to re-install windows because it was missing some system32 files and I could not repair the istalation so I had to reinstall but I did not format any of the hard drives, all my programme files from previous install are still there just none of the info stored in "my documents", "my photos" is there.

    Try this.
    http://www.iolo.com/sr/2/
    trial version for 30 days.
But if you copied or installed anything on D: then in all probability you will not get everything back.

Did you do a repair reinstall or parallel reinstall?

Just a thought, if the scenario is that you copied the photos to My Document from D: and then the windows crashed. After which you did a repair reinstall, it may have created you a new account profile. It would look like windows had deleted your data. However it only created a new User Profile. This means it sets up new links for the new profile to My docs and so on.

Check under C:\Documents and Settings for your old account/ profile name. It may have . in front of it. If you do look at

    C:\Documents and Settings\.[Your Profile Name]\Desktop

See if your past desktop items are there. If so do a search for a document that you know the name of.
