    Hi,

I had a Malware problem which TimW was a great help in sorting. Everything has been fine since except I have lost some sound.
    See here http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=238705

All Windows sounds have stopped as have all sounds through web pages like you tube.

However Spotify and Windows media do play sounds.

Any ideas how to fix this?

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

    Greetings, CaptainSc.

Glad you got your malware problems sorted.

The possibility exists that the cleaning procedures may have affected either your audio drivers or the handshaking between Windows and the drivers. I'd suggest first uninstalling/reinstalling your audio software to get that step out of the way - if no change, then we can progress to other avenues (file association fixes, System File Checker, etc.).

    Can you open Device Manager?
    Start -> Run -> devmgmt.msc -> OK

    Any Yellow Exclamation marks?

Better yet, do you know how to take a screenshot of this for us to review?
upload as an attachment here, you will probably have to .zip it first

Thanks for the reply, I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers but that had no effect, is there anything else I need to try reinstalling?

Yes can run it but no exclamation marks.

Screen shot attached, something else I wanted to highlight is the volume mixer. There used to be 4 or 5 things I could adjust, now there are only 2?

    Hi all,

I still can't get any sound on my laptop, does any one have any idea how to fix this?

What is the make and model of your laptop? Perhaps the best thing to do is to uninstall those drivers, and reinstall them (or an updated version).

    Try this
Your choices might be different but maybe the wrong audio device is selected.

It's a Toshiba Satellite Pro L300. I have already tried deleting the drivers from device manager and it didn't work. Am I missing something?

    Where do you see this?

In the Control Panel under Sounds and Audio Devices (XP is what I run) so I can't tell you the exact wording in Win 7 if that is your OS.

I'm on Vista, when I go into control panel and click on sounds I get 3 tabs, see attached screen shot.

Interestingly when I click on configure and then test I get sound.
    Am I missing something here?

What do you have selected in the sound tab? Playback and Recording is not the problem so no need to show what is on those tabs.

Not what I expected to see so I started looking at the other screenshots.

In Device Manager, you show only High Def Audio Device. That's generic. I think you need the chipset drivers because you probably have an onboard sound chip and there is nothing installed for it.

    I'm here http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/home.jsp
but stalled because there are 25 L300 models!

Sorry I'm in the US so your model is not in the list of downloads they allow me to look through.
Maybe someone in the UK can find the motherboard driver.

Ok I've found the sound drivers on the Toshiba website and installed. Problem still exists. I've gone into control panel/sound and there is a screen shot of the only change.

Also take a look at the other screen shot, which is of my volume mixer there used to be 4 or 5 devices not just the 2 you can see.

You do not want sound drivers. You need motherboard/chipset drivers.
