Help, 8 year old daughter playing on computer, i guess she thought it was a piano. after she was done, blue screen with error message and computer would not turn off. finally got it to start again, but windows would only run in safe mode. but nothing would work. had window 98se, had to uninstall this, but only had window98 to reload. Can only get 16 color display (not 16 bit, just 16 color) and have no sound. lots of error messages popping up. conflicting files in device manager . TOTALLY LOST, NOT A PC GURU BY ANY MEANS. Any ideas where to start?

The 16 colours problem is caused by having the incorrect video driver loaded. Just download the correct drivers for your card and install it. That should be enough to increase it past 16 colors.

I tried that. I have an nec monitor, i went to their website and downloaded the drivers for that particular monitor, but it did not change the color settings. Its only giving me 2 options- 8 colors or 16 colors. I cannot figure this out.

you actually want the Driver for the Graphics Card that tells the monitor what to do. if you give us a computer model # (or if you happen to know your Video Card model #) we can point you in the right direction :)

we'll need the emachines model # and/or seiral number that both should be located on the case somewhere (either written on it, or on a sticker).

ok, found the model, here are the specs http://www.emachines.com/support/support_info.html?prodName=eTower 600is

emachines doesnt have a driver download link, but i think i can hunt you down an intel 810 chipset driver that should fix the problem... give me a minute :p

    EDIT:....

    and here it is. http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scr...oductID=178&OSFullName=Windows*+Me&submit=Go!

the first one is the graphics driver, if that doesnt work, the rest of the drivers are there as well (like the chipset audio driver)

hope that works for you! :)

have the download, but it keeps rejecting it saying the driver installed is the best one. not sure what i'm doing wrong

you might try uninstalling the current driver from Device Manager first to avoid a conflict. According to Intel, the driver you just burnt to disk is the most recent one for that chipset, so I think it's worth a shot.

as for the sound driver, the link on intel doesnt show a driver.
Emachines lists your sound as Crystal CS4281 3D PCI Audio
which I found a link to on driverguide (you need to sign up to download, but its free) http://www.soundcard-drivers.com/drivers/32/32359.htm

its a zip file, so in case you are unfamiliar with self-installation, you'd need to open device manager, locate your sound device, and 'update driver' and specify the location of where you extracted the zip file.

    hope this works for you!

Ok, that was great, i have manged to get back almost all sound. the only problem is that i do not have sound when playing a music cd in cdrom drive. any suggestions? ;)

check and make sure the audio cable is plugged in from the CD-ROM to the sound device (onboard i believe). it should be a very small cable with a wide but thin 4 pin header on it. if its loose, the CD-ROM cant send audio straight to the soundcard.

yes it is plugged in. i can even get the cd drive to play the cd samplers from the win98 disc with video and sound and can see and hear it just fine. it will play the music cd's i just don't hear any sound.

have you checked your sound options? maybe you have CD Audio muted? what are you using to play the cd?

checked the sound options. all volumes are set at 50%. using the standard cd player that is in the accessories under the start menu under entertainment that comes with windows 98

well gave up on the cdplayer. i installed windows media player 7.1 and it seems to be fine. the only problem is that after a restart, it sometimes kicks out the sound driver for some reason and i have to reinstall it before i'll get any sound. Have any clue why this would happen? i have the sound driver saved to a cd.
