    Hi Dan

First off boot into Safe Mode (F8 at boot) and see if your text dialog boxes or Excel worksheet show?

If so or not, then run the likes of CCleaner and its cleaner and while I dont think its going to amount to much it will clear the temps out.

Reboot and see if you get the dialog boxes back.

    Have you malware scanned?

Is this just in Excel or in Word also when opening a already created doc?

Have you installed or updated any applications before this happened?

    Hello DavidGP,

Thank you for the responce. No I have no text in safe mode either. Even when I open something like the task manager it opens with no thing in it and the buttons are there but they don't have any text to say what they are. It is the same with anything i try to open word, excell, avg, if i open c/ drive it shows the folders but when you scroll over them it does not tell the name it's just a blank box.
Even add and remove programs shows the icons but no text to tell what it is.

can't really run anything in this state--very frustrating.

    thanks,

    Dan

    Hi Dan

I can imagine its frustrating as hell, and I do hope that you backup your important files on a regular basis, as just thinking in part this maybe HDD corruption or Ram issues, but I'll be honest I've never seen this type of thing happen, so could be also malware.

If you can run your malware software then do try them, I know it maybe hard with menus and no text in some areas, but see how you go.

Also try this and open a command prompt start > Run and type cmd and hit enter, does the CMD window appear ok, if so type sfc /scannow and hit enter.

Does your PC only have one profile on it as in you are the only user account? as a profile corruption is another thought I just had, and if you have another account on the PC login to that, or see if in Control Panel > User Account you can create a new account to test.

You might have a needed system font, or several that are missing. Look in your C:\WINDOWS\Fonts folder I don't think I've added fonts. I have 446; some have TT for TrueType, some O for Opentype and some A for Adobe. At least I think that's how it works.

If you are missing needed fonts, that might explain why no text appears in boxes.

I don't know but maybe sfc/ scannow might replace the missing fonts. At least I know it won't harm your system.
