Had an existing network of both 4-wired and one wireless which had been working fine. While doing some hardware modifications with one of the PCs lost the wireless connection on laptop. It will not configure using the network wizard. Tried system restore using several dates none of which would restore.

    * XP (home)
    * Built in card
    * Using Belkin wireless router to engage the wired PCs
    * I believe the firewall is properly disabled for the wireless

    any ideas?

    thanks:eek:

When you are referring to the firewall, is it the Windows firewall or 3rd party? (Norton, Zone Alarm, etc.)
If you run the networking wizard, the Windows firewall gets turned back on sometimes. That could be the hang up.

Also, on the laptop, is the previous connection completely missing from the listing in the wireless connection properties?
When you right click on the wireless icon in the tray, do you see the previous network in the available listing?

I have disengaged windows firewall per the instructions.

Under network connections, there is a dialup icon; a 1394 connection a local area connection and a wireless network connection. When I right click on the wireless icon I see the following:

No wireless networks found in range.
Make sure the wireless switch on your computer is on.
To see an updated list, click "Refresh network list"

Did you refresh and see your network?
If not, on your router, do you have any security enabled? Or do you have the network identifier broadcast disabled in the router?

Not sure what you mean by "refresh"?

Actually, I'm not sure. How would I be able to tell?

    thanks:confused:

After you right click your wireless icon, and view available wireless networks, in the upper left corner is "Refresh network list" , click on and see if your network is there.

Aahhhh. Right click and then refresh, gives the same message:

No wireless networks found in range.Make sure the wireless switch on your computer is on.
To see an updated list, click "Refresh network list"

Did you set up the router yourself or someone else?
Can you get into the router set up utility?

The router is simply a hardware device with no actual access.
I was thinking of a way to "reboot" the router.

Yes, I set it up initially. A couple years ago. Cannot recall if software came with it.

What model of Belkin router do you have?

I went to the Belkin website to search for software, but the information (web address) Belkin gave did not work. I will go look and see if I had any software for the wireless. The Belkin switch (F5D5130-5) used for the wired PCs, did come with software.

Here are 2 links to use for basic set up and security on wireless -

    http://www.ezlan.net/Wireless_Config.html
    http://www.ezlan.net/Wireless_Security.html

If you don't have any security on your wireless router, other people can possibly get on your connection and see the info on your computers.
Follow the above guide to get started.
If you want to use MAC filtering to help secure your connection here's some info.
To get the MAC # from your wireless card or wired cards, you can use
    Start> run> cmd
    @ the prompt type getmac
The MAC # is under the Physical Address heading. Do this for each computer. Each card has a separate MAC address.

Post back if you have problems or questions.

getmac is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

This was the message I received ----^

try start run, cmd, then ipconfig /all
    that will work.

Okay,,, located the mac number. Cannot remember where to apply?

Also, do I need to set under <local disk properties> "Allow network users to change my files"????

Only if you want network users to be able to change your files :) You would apply the mac numbere to your routers admin interface under mac addresses for wireless devices.
