    Hey everyone,
I have windows xp pro oem, and I lost my cd key. Is it somewhere on the cd or is there a way I can recover it?

    Thanks

The key is not stored on the CD, but separatly, dependent on how you aquired your OEM version, it would be on the Case, Manual, Case of PC

If you have not formatted the hard drive your install, then you can use one of the below to recover it from the registry..

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=5188 ( needs >net 2.0 installed )

If you have formatted the hard drive and cannot find the licence key / COA sticker on one of the above places I mentioned, then you will need to call Microsoft in your country and see if they can help ( you may need proof of purchase )

This question has come up again. I think a sticky might be in order.

You can call microsoft and they might issue another key. I had an issue with a key once and they gave me another one.

Is this a complete format and re-install? Or is this a repair install? If a repair install, then there is a way to obtain this key.

    On a seperate machine, download:

    http://majorgeeks.com/Winkey_Finder_d4501.html

    or

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=2612

    onto a floppy.

While windows asks for your cd key, press the SHIFT + F10 keys.

This will bring up the command prompt.

Insert the floppy that has either of the above programs on it.

    type in the following:

    a: (press enter)
    dir (press enter)

Look for a file name that ends with .exe

if you find one, simply type in the file name (without the .exe) and press enter.

Navigate within that program to find the xp cd key, that is already used within the system you are reparing on.

I, btw, do this all the time. :)
