I have the same problem as CaptainSc http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=239226

I studied and applied all of your advice to him, still not working properly. I am trying to help my sister with her Toshiba Laptop, it had several viruses. I thoroughly cleaned the hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP and all her other desired programs. All installations went flawlessly for a change. Accept the audio volume is very low. All normal known methods to increase the volume have failed. I downloaded and installed the latest drivers from Microsoft, Toshiba, and Intel. Intel even has a diagnostic program that I tried. All to no avail. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

One trap I fell for was that my Toshiba has a movable adjuster under the front edge (almost hidden) to the right of centre.

I don't know how to better describe it. ;)
Make sure you adjust it all the way to the right (for the loudest volume).

It is easily overlooked. I did. :-o

Well, I'll be dipped! After all those frustrated efforts, that is the fix. Now, it works like a charm! Many thanks for that embarrassing reminder.
