    Anyone have recommendations for motherboards?

    with or without cpus

My requirements are too high dual core preferably with hyper threading
    DDR3 or ddr4 ram
    at least 3 sata ports
    need at least 1 pci-e x16 slot
need at least 1 or 2 usb 3.0 ports
    micro atx size
Intel preferred but can consider amd is cost if efficient

I know some motherboards with built in cpus are limited but this is just intended to be a media player/ small server

    "Just" a small server?

You need to pick which CPU (or CPU family) you want to use, then look for a motherboard that supports it. And I would sure look for one that supports DDR4. DDR3 is old tech.

And of course, you need to be specific about your budget. $300 may be "low cost" for some while $100 may be way too much for others.

I have no specific requirements in terms of cpu or memory type

my budget for the motherboard alone would be $100 or less , if i can get away with both a motherboard and a cpu for $100 or less even better. I only need a dual core cpu

I am not opposed to a 2nd hand motherboard/cpu , i guess i just wanted something better or less power hungry than an intel core 2 duo e8400 , but i wanted to take advantage of the new hd graphics on processors

Considering Newegg alone has over 120 Intel and AMD based microATX motherboards for under $100, I think need to do your own homework, and start by deciding if you want Intel or AMD, then perhaps pick a motherboard brand. I like Gigabyte and ASUS, but I also like ASRock and MSI.

Less than $100 for both the motherboard and CPU is going to be challenge. You might considered used.

Little late to this party . . . but I wonder what the OP ended up doing?

I recently picked up a refurbished HP business class motherboard with the Q77 chipset (Elite 8300 board) and an Intel G645 dual core CPU for just under $28US. It has several USB 3.0 ports, a PCI-E X16, and other goodies.

The problem with HP boards is they are proprietary in that they don't use standard ATX power supplies. However, a 24 Pin to 6 Pin adapter cable can be had for about $6US which will take care of that issue. Depending on the board even the adapter might need an easy tweak or two. But for the money I was willing to take a chance on the project.

    Time will tell.
