Low FPS on Good System

Hey guys,
Let me start by saying Im an advanced computer user, pretty much my life and my job. Anyways heres my problem, I have a P4 Prescot 3ghz with a 6800 GT card and 1 gig of 2700 ddr memory with a Abit board. WHile playing the Age of empires 3 demo with the settings at max and rezz at 1280 by 1024 I get at most 20 to 30 frames. Yes i know I should lower them, but alot of other people are getting much better frames with the same system and settings. This happens in other games also, including HL 2 and Doom 3 and BF 2. For the most part the frames are good, but if I look in a certian direction, like out over an open field ort some other random spot my frames wiill dip into the 20s and 30s. I have ruled out everything, fresh installs, all updated chipset drivers and video drivers, removed everything not needed on my board. Tryed different memory, different video and Power Supply, even a different mobo, but I havent been able to get the performance that I expected out of my system. If any of you have any ideas, please let me know.

same exact problem but i have an x850 witch are really f'n good

 

this sometimes happens to me... especially with half-life 2 I have same processor with HT, a gig of ram, x800xl, I'll be getting 150-200 fps at times, but when I start a fire fight in cs source I drop immeisly to 20 or 25, also in half-life 2 when a barrel blows up it'll sometimes freeze the game, doom 3 is alright, but when I turn quickly it'll cause a quick lag spike, hopefully someone has an answer.

 

Just a sugguestion but it might be because you have Intel processors with Prescott cores which have major cooling problems and are actually a bit less powerful than the previous core. The Northridge I think it was. Don't quote me on that. It's just a thought.

 

they're built able to withstand those heat problems, regardless it's a 3.0 ghz processor I think it should be able to handle these games, also the big factor is the graphics card.

first whats the model of your abit board and what are the latencies of that pc2700,these both look like the culprits to me,does your board support dual channel,do you have 2 sticks and are they identical,is it running in dual channel mode?old memory and an old chipset can kill cpu performance and system performance

As trunk said the prescotts do have heat problems,so I would make sure you have at least 1 120mm intake and 1 120mm exaust,I would also consider a aftermarket hsf combo and some quality thermal paste.

yes vaio they are built to withstand those temperatures by throttling back the speed they run at when they hit 70-75c,reducing performance,heres a video of it in action,you will have to give an email address to see it.

I think you should stop looking at games and start doing some benchwork ,my fav is sandralite downloadable from major geeks all in one tools section,run the cpu and memory bandwidth performance tests and see how you score compared to the test cpu's,then run 3dmark 03,you should have a score of around 10000 with your video card performance slider set to peformance

 

I already got it covered it idles at 49 and under load at 55 so it's alright, what did you say the big bottle neck could be in lamens terms, I'm still pretty new to computers.

The board is a is7-vs running addr 2700, think the latency is 2.5 or 3, it is about 2 year old memory, so I guess I could check with a newer set. It isnt in dual channel, though I have heard there isnt much a difference benchmark wise. I do have an aftermarket heatsink, a real nice thermal take on that is pretty much top the line. I repositioned the heat sink with new thermal paste.

New question for ya too, think i borked the board though, as I was grounded while moving it out of the case. Everything turns on but it wont post and nothing is showing on the screen. I took it out of the case and is sitting on a peice of wood with only the bare essentials hooked up and it still wont boot. So i think i need to replace it. Tried resetting bios and removing cmos battery but no go.
