I have 8gigs of memory so I was surprised to see the msg pop up. First time I've had this memory issue. Windows suggests increasing virtual memory, but I'd like to shut down processes like dwm.exe.

It's the only one I see so far that I may not need. Can I get some aide with the pros and cons on that process please. I know, not every computer is the same but of the more common processes can I get suggestions on the least necessary. Forgot to tell you the O/S is Vista Ultimate.

Go to your virtual memory settings and untick automatically manage paging file size for all drives and check custom size and enter the amount which is recommended at the bottom and it should disappear.

    A few questions:
How large is the main hard drive in this PC (My Computer->right click on main drive and select "Properties")?
How much free space is available on the PC's main drive?
What kind of processor in the PC (Start->Accessories->System Tools->System Information)?

OK. I was checking to see if your HD is almost full, but you should be fine there. Problems like the low virtual memory one can be associated with a disk that is nearly full, say below 10% free space. Windows really starts throwing things overboard to attempt to find space for virtual memory (which is located on the hard drive) but also to use for temporary operations.

You must be using some real RAM hogging programs. See here:

My experience is that dwm.exe (Dr. Watson) will shut itself down when it no longer smells potential problems...

What I did (so far) was to add 1GB to virtual memory and I uninstaled AVG web tuneup, the only change prior to the low memory notification.

Open Windows Task Manager, Maximise it, click Processes, click Memory. Take a snapshot and upload it.

Have a look at a snapshot of my Windows Task Manager.
