Lower GPU temps give higher FPS?

My gtx260 runs 80C at it's hottest. I'm told this is OK.

The question is this: Do FPS increase with decreased GPU temps. I mean what if I could get it to 70C max? Would that effect FPS? Does the cooler the GPU give higher FPS is pretty much what I'm asking. I know that higher effects negatively, but say I get the GPU at it's coolest possible. Will that give me more FPS than 80 or 75. I hope I'm making sense. Thanks!

Also, nothing else is stopping it from going lower (RAM, CPU, etc) just assume I have the best of the best or whatever. Just asking about the GPU.

If the GPU is still operating safely within normal temperatures, a change in temperature will not affect FPS rates. However, if the GPU (or associated components) are stressed and overheating, then certainly stability and performance can be affected.

That said, on sites that allow larger signatures, mine typically includes the line, Heat is the bane of all electronics! And it should be noted that does not necessarily mean too much heat. High temperatures over long periods of time, even if still within specified tolerances, can increase aging of the components. So if you can keep your temperatures near the low end of the recommended operating range, you increase the potential for the graphics solution to have a very long, trouble free lifespan.

My cards run consistently at around 90c under load without any problems whatsoever, But as Digerati said it will reduce the longevity of the card.

thanks. like i said, i get around 80, so I guess I'm good then. And that's only when I'm doing a stress test.

Basically what digerati said was bang on.

You won't experience any "lag" or loss of performance from a slightly hotter GPU, until it hits it's max temps (somewhere near 100C) then it will throttle and you will most likely experience a BSOD or lock-up due to overheating.

But yeah aslong as you stay under 90C you will be perfectly OK and not suffer any throttling or lag.

I forget where I saw it, but I have seen it in print: Each 10C rise in operating temperature halves the life of the component involved.

Could be true bit i highly doubt it, i ran my 8800GTX for 4 years at %100 load (around 90c) and it's still going.

I don't believe you can apply that generic statement to all electronics but every student of electronics is taught and understands it is a proven fact that excessive heat increases aging.
lol A single example does not make, or break the rule. But besides that, 90°C is not excessive for graphics cards, and 4 years is hardly a long life! Finally, sorry, but no way your card has run at 100% for 4 years straight. No program, with the exception of benchmarking programs, not even the most demanding games, push a graphics card to 100% and hold it there for long periods of time.
