lsass.exe is bad notice

my son used my wife's computer. The next time she tried to boot it up, half way throuht boot the screen goes black with a error box that says lsass.exe is bad. You can click ok or X off. It then starts the boot process again and stops in the same place. power down and then back up, the same results. She is running XP pro. tried dos, ran virus scan same thing. Boot by disc-- no help. any thoughts?

 

lsass.exe is the Local Security Authentication Server i believe. however, from what it sounds like, have a lsass.exe worm/virus/trojan whatever you want to call it. i think your best bet might be to jump over to the spyware forum and see if they can give ya a hand.

Correct. lsass.exe is the Local Security Authentication Server. It verifies the validity of user logons to your PC/Server. Look here for more information.

 

At first, I thought it was a virus too. That's why we ran Symantec virus scan and Spybot. Neither one found a virus or a worm, which brings us back to startup error. I have found a lot of information about the lsass.exe, both worm and startup program, but nowhere can I find how to correct the error.

 

after re-reading your first post, the way you worded the error makes more sense to me. a box coming up telling you there was an error. not a box came up and said "lsass.exe is bad!" makes more sense to me now lol

 

the box that came up did say lsass.exe is bad. it did not say error. If you press ok that is in the middle of the box the computer will try to re-start and stops when it gets back to that point. It was a information type box. It didn't have any other information in it . I'll keep trying to correct it in safe mode. Thanks anyway
