I have lost the ability to defrag my disks with the defragger that came with Windows XP. I click on the defrag icon and the program comes up, but nothing happens when I click on defrag or analize. When I right click on the defragger icon and select "run as", and change to a different Id, this is what it comes up as. I am the administrater as I am the only one on this computer.

You will often see references to scannow sfc [System File Checker (Sfc.exe)] in various online newsgroups etc. This is a great tool for troubleshooting Windows XP problems. The main reason for using this utility is when you suspect there may be a problem with a missing or disabled Windows XP system file.

You can try doing this: Run the System File Checker
Click Start > Run > sfc /scannow > press Enter
Note: Do not forget the SPACE between sfc /

Make sure you have your Windows XP disk in the drive before doing this as you may need it if System File Checker [sfc] asks you to insert this CD. Get a cup of coffee and relax. This process can take a few minutes to complete. : )

    Good Luck.

Thanks for the reply, just got it fixed by right clicking on dfrg.inf and installing it. BTW, that is a great tool.

The MS defragger is very avg. It is Diskeeper v6.0 you can get Diskeeper Lite v7.1.xx.xx (same prod) here for free I believe it has a better engine it is certainly more efficient on resources and time. The only pain is the buy now banner, just close it (had for 4-5 months now).

I recently ran into a lot of defragging problems...

I'm guessing that you downloaded a poorly built music or video processing beta software that is not compatible with something major in your software environment... Or you are running a version of Defrag2.. which came with a nasty downloads manager, that is real hard to get rid of.. and seriously messes up the OS...

I find that most of the music and video softwares I try generally seriously mess up the OS, including shutting down the defragger... I can't find a good one.. one that isn't hellbent on possessing my computer for advertising and marketing concerns at all costs to me...

One way I found to force the Windows defragger to kick-in, is to download Microsoft's aftermarket defragger, and try to run it... It's likely your PC with suddenly freeze up, but after hard restart things that didn't work might work...

Another option is to download Diskeeper7... then do a regedit to delete all the Diskeeper Internet links... I advise against Diskeeper 10... Using that one forced me to do a format-C.. and it had set dozens of backdoor entries.. as if suddenly my PC was owned by them...

I often run through regedit, deleting Internet links, after installing experimental softwares... The last attack I did to the registry was to eliminate everything Macromedia, and Shockwave.. then all the lockup glitches vanished, and the PC ran fast and perky again... Seems that Macromedia stuff is like boat racing while dragging your anchor... Seems that all that Macromedia stuff is just fancy packaged spywares, that slow down your PC, and fill it with irritating power management problems...

Spybot should create an add-on that deletes everything Macromedia from the registry, given that after any Macromedia stuff is uninstalled, the registry is still full of their active trojans and links.. and al the cleaner softwares don't recognize them as crap... You must delete them manually...

Check your registry.. Is it full of Macromedia and Shockwave entries?..
Recommend you clean it all out, then restart, and try your defragger again...
You might be one of the lucky ones... I still don't know the meaning of the word... I'll probably win a lotto the day before I die...
