I'm on Vista and had my laptop on automatic update.

A recent M$ update caused my computer to go into a configuration loop so I had to use my recovery CD to get back to my desktop, wiping my hard drive in the process. This wasn't much of a problem as I have everything backed up, it's just a big inconvenience!

What do you all suggest with regard to updates as I'm not sure which one caused the problem. Do you turn off Auto update?

    Any thoughts will be useful

I keep my setting for Windows Update on "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them." That way, I can take a look at the pending updates before downloading and installing them and then decide. I don't recall ever rejecting an "Important" update but do not get all "Optional" updates.
