    Hi everyone.

I am in desperate need of someone's help.

The short version of this story is, I live in a communal block which has pre installed wifi and Internet. So when you arrive you open your browser the login screen pops up, you pay the monthly amount and bingo you have wifi. However you have to pay for a specified number of devices and the more you have the more it costs, also you have to pay for your download speed wich is then divided between you chosen devices. So if I pick 2 devises and 10 Mbps I'm actually only getting 5 and I can only use the two devises i specified as they are registered though my MAC address so my question is.

Are there any known ways round this I.e. Can I use an old router with a known MAC address as one device and connect everything to that?

    The short answer is yes.
The download speed to the router will be 10 Mbps. Connnecting 2 or more devices to the router and using all at the same time means that 10 Mbps will be devided between them.

Won't the supplied wifi in all its wisdom know that a new device has been connected through the router due to its MAC address

I may have misunderstood your query.
Firstly, there are not many routers that can connect to a Wi-Fi hotspot.
Secondly, if you are thinking about using a router to only pay for 1 device, and then connecting multiple devices to the router, you'll be violating the law in many countries.

Have a look at the best answer to this question.

Thank you very much indeed, dispite the legality of the issue this is exactly what I was looking for.

    Suggestion:
Add your location (at least the country) to your profile. That way someone might suggest a cheaper and legal alternative.

You can see my location. I have a 24 month contract and pay less than $10,00 for 4 GB per month. And that includes a 21.6 Mbps mobile modem.

What are you using for a cell phone? Many new smartphones are able connect via wifi (so you are not using your cell minutes) and are able to establish their own hotspots too. So you can register your phone as one device, then share as many devices as you want through your cell phone.

Alternatively, you can get something like one of these devices.

There is also this - but not sure how well it works.

I'm using an iPhone 6, although when you use a hotspot it uses your mobile data rather than the wifi.
