Mac external HD RAID 0 stripe set failed .. options?

Hello all,

I've learned the ultimate RAID 0 tragedy and deserve all the flaming idiocy remarks you can muster .. but after that I'd like some advice on steps forward.

I have WD My Book Duo Thunderbolt 6TB external drive. I use it for storing large video files prior to processing. I set it up RAID 0 to get the space and speed with the standard settings the product came with. I got the errors after transporting the drive to a new home overseas, which limits the recovery services options. I have done nothing to the drives other then get the messages.

I have an iMac running OS 10.7.5 and most of the threads and forums indicate to use windows software.

If anyone can suggest how to test what the problem is, software I could use to repair, or steps forward much thanks.

 

Did it all used to work fine? If so, I don't see what switching to Windows will prove. It looks like the second drive in the array has failed and with striped arrays being what they are (where data is scattered across all drives in the array), when one drive fails, you lose the array. If you have not made a backup, it seems you are hosed.

BTW, RAID0 should never be used "to get the space". It is only for speed. But obviously, needs a robust backup plan in place, and frequently used too. A mirrored or hybrid mirrored/striped array is a much better option (if you really need RAID - most users don't). After all, disk space is cheap. Recovery, if possible, is time consuming and can be very expensive. Data is often invaluable, and if not backed up, irreplaceable.

IF you can get Windows to recognize the array, you might try Recuva from the makers of CCleaner to see if any data can be recovered - but I would not hold my breath.
