If you want to go OS X, you will need to eat the cost of a new machine. Alternately, you could go Linux. Of course, if one has trouble with Windows, Linux is not the answer. It takes a power user to get a grip on it, usually.

Most of the time, an OS is what you make it. I've successfully had completely stable Windows (98, 2000, XP, 2003, Vista). Likewise I've done the same for GNU/Linux (Debian, Sabayon, Gentoo, Arch, Ubuntu). I've also had no issues with OS X (Tiger). I've heard instability cries, and bug whines for each OS listed above.

Now I am sure some dolt is going to come around and mention hacking OS X and putting it on a non Apple computer, but I will make this clear: It is illegal, it is hacked, and like other pirated things, not supported nor discussed here.

is there any point in using an emulator or something equivalent and run MAC osx within it?

kind of defeating the object i suppose, but would allow me to get to grips with mac, and still have use of windows xp.

I have used linux before, but i dont think it was for me.

and more white hats are needed, yeah :D

OS X wont run under an emulated environment in Windows (officially), and it would be slow anyway. If you are having Windows issues, that wont resolve them.

Of course, we have a nifty forum here, you are welcome to post your problems here for others to assist you with :)
