This new macgyver sucks badly. If you watch all the 1985 versions compare it to now the 1985 version trumps 2016 version.I know i know they only made like 5 episodes or so but still even the first 5 1985 episodes where so much better even with the crappy video.

Looks good from the trailer and guessing without any research that the creators are the CSI* ones?
Think the issue with remakes are that the original without glitzy special effects are raw and were neat in the day, but do glitzy special effects make them better in the remake, sadly we always with a remake refer back to the original and any remake is never going to compare.

I watched the first episode of the 2016 version and pretty much every thing you see in the trailer movie is what is all is in the first episode lol.So so sad CBS sucks any more.

The thing i liked about the 1985 version. Is the Pun jokes.jack dalton never used a gun.

The only time you see RDA use a gun is the pilot episode be cause he hated guns at the time.Until RDA went into Star Gate episodes.

Oh and in the 2016 version there is way to much tech jury-rigging.

On a side note as remakes did watch the Ghostbusters remake last weekend and it was OK! not brilliant as dont think you can recreate Bill Murray at all...

A large part of what made 1985 MacGyver unique and popular is that their main concept was to NOT use guns or deadly violence, and instead use other creative ways to capture and subdue the various villains MacGyver came across during the series' many seasons. In 1985, being a geek meant being weird - the word was barely used. Those of us who were around back then were referred to as nerds, and it was not a good thing when they started calling you a nerd in school. Not at all.

What made the 1985 revision of MacGyver so popular was that the hero actually was a real geek. When a guy refuses to leave home without a multi-tool and duct tape, when his job doesn't actually require him to always carry both, there's nothing else you can call him. Except maybe "nerd". Or "weird".

But MacGyver was also charming, successful, attractive (He actually looked good in a mullet! That is practically unheard of.), and he always got the girl in the end. You could even argue that the TV show MacGyver was the start of all the paradigm shifts in modern society that eventually made being a geek, cool.

Fast-forward to 2016: As I mentioned, being a geek is cool. No one is surprised if that has made you successful, only if it hasn't. The verb MacGyver has been added to the Oxford Dictionary. Gaming is a professional sport.

In other words, the show's original concept is no longer enough. A geek action hero is not an oxymoron anymore. It's not even rare. This means something needs to be added, and the extra needs to be something that a new audience understands and can relate to, while at the same time have enough of the original that people who regularly use the verb MacGyvering to describe improvised home repairs done with paper clips and chewing gum, recognize that verb's original meaning in the 2016 Edition of the TV show. It also needs to appeal to fans of the original - good luck with that by the way. Most of us haven't watched it since the late 80's and our memories are vastly improved by the nostalgia factor, and the fact we were 20-25 years younger then, than we are now. I'm quite certain that I didn't have nearly as high expectations on my entertainment media back then, as I do now.

Rebooting a show like MacGyver in 2016 is a daunting task. I'm honestly surprised that someone had the chutzpah to give it a try.

I also think that there s a possibility that the 2016 version could be entertaining to watch, as long as I can avoid falling into the trap of expecting it to inspire the feelings of sheer wonder and hero worship I felt when I was watching it at the age of 13, and my mind was blown by the, at that time, entirely unheard of concept that a person who knows nearly everything there is to know about computers and science, wasn't a complete loser at everything else in his life. No other TV show or movie made the geek the hero because he was a geek..

If that was too long to read, let me summarize:

The user experience with MacGyver 2016 will be considerably better if the show is evaluated entirely on its own merits, as if the original never existed. Yes, a reboot should to an extent be faithful to the original, but only where it still works and makes the show/movie enjoyable to watch. Granted, if it deviates too far, it should stop trying to claim it's a reboot, but I'm going to withhold judgement of the new MacGyver until I've had a chance to actually watch several episodes' worth.

Most likely though, if you love the original of something, you almost always hate the reboot. That's just human nature.

    I agree on many levels.

But they are trying to base the 2016 off of Richard Dean Anderson.

I mean it's like trying to watch a bunch of female actors trying to be the Ghost busters.lol

The only reason why they are attempting to produce a newer version is be cause of the original series.I understand that to day is a digital age but. They are trying to hard to make it flashy and too geek like any how.

Oh let's smash a laptop with a hammer with out figuring out the real problem.

The problem is that the 2016 is trying to hard to be 1985 lol.

Lucas Till is not funny. In my opinion.

A lot of the 1985 stuff in the show really does work.

    Watch this below.

This should have been the MacGyver reboot when he is older.

Even though it's a ten min trailer film it's still better than the new reboot lol so sad.

Let me revive this old thread and add my 2ct

From all good old shows out there MacGyver, is the one that should never ever have been rebooted.
For a very simple reason the technology back then was repurposable, hackable with a screw driver or knife, or a hammer.
Modern technology is not, you have highly integrated software defined systems that can operate only in very special conditions.
You can't pull a camera from a cell phone and extend it without a custom flet-flex adapter with the right plug.
You pretty much can't do much of anything with how modern devices are manufactured.
Disposable hardware is disposable not reparable/modifiable.

And what's a MacGyver show without MacGyvering around?
