I'm new here so take it easy since I have less knowledge of fixing these things than most of you on the forums. I had to dust off my laptop and put it on-line for the second time in its life to get here.

I recently moved and in setting up my desktop machine, Windows XP will not start up. I get the "COMPAQ" screen flash by then the windows loading screen takes forever then I get a black screen with a cursor then a popup window appears with the following:
    lsass.exe unable to locate
    NTDSAPI.dll not found

I tried going into system recovery at the "Compaq" page by hitting F10 and doing a recovery, nothing changed, its still not starting.

    Please help!

Oh, by the way, I keep getting these pop up windows messanger service things telling me to fix my registry and go to some site to do such. Each messanger service that pops up tells me to go to a different site, what is going wrong and how do I make it stop?

    Thanks
    Brian

    The more specs...the better!!

If you are unsure...download Everest, here , then run that and it will tell you your system specs!!

can you get into safe mode??

Sounds like malware to me, you may want to post in the spyware forums, after reading:

Windows version is XP Home, machine has an Anthalon 2600+ CPU, 256 mb ram, big hard drive, standard dial up, what else? I can not run any program on it because it will not even boot into windows. I run AVG and update it regularly.

Last time I used the machine was in late June just before it was put into storage for a move, this is something new that happened when I tried to fire it up after hooking everything back up at the new house. I did take the side cover off to clean all the dust out, could something have gotten screwed up with doing that?
I will try to get it into safe mode.

    thanks

Maybe check to see if something has become disconnected, hard drive ,cdrom etc. Push cables to make sure they are making contact. sm
