Just downloaded Macrium Reflect: tried to clone disk which failed with message: "clone failed - read failed - 22 - "broken pipe".

Anyone have any idea what that means?

Tell us exactly what you are trying to do, clone your drive to a replacement drive? Backup your drive? Transfer system to SSD? Something else?

trying to clone my hard drive to external hard drive. I have Win 7 64 OS.

Is that as a backup or with the intention of being able to boot to it?

I want a copy of my hard drive to have available in case of a crash. I don't see what difference it makes if I am getting the above mentioned error. I'm wondering if the issue is my computer or the external drive.

It appears to be quite a common error when cloning but no obvious common cause. I suggest, if it's simply to have the capability to restore your system in the event of a major problem, that rather than cloning you try imaging the drive. You can do that either from the installed version of Macrium or from the Macrium PE rescue disk - hope you have created one! There are several advantages to imaging versus cloning, one being that the resulting compressed file only needs a fraction of the space, not a whole disk. Cloning is normally only used when replacing a hard disk.

Which, apparently, GrreatRon wants to be able to do if his internal hard drive fails.

I recommend that he tries cloning with AOMEI Backupper.

Thanks for the info - I have downloaded & installed AOMEI Backupper but my external drive has crashed. I'll try it later when I get another one.

Perhaps there were problems with the external drive already when you tried cloning with Macrium and that's why it failed?

i think the external hard drive causes the wrong thing. what is the memory of the HD ? And i need to know the Win 7 64 OS too

By "memory", do you mean capacity? As long as the capacity of the external drive is the same as or greater than the internal drive, cloning is possible. The version of Win 7 x64 doesn't matter. Macrium and AOMEI will work on any version from Basic to Enterprise.
