    I'm not sure I understand the question completely, but here's a try...

    Apparently, the PHP code in left_col.phtml is
    PHP:
    <a href="<?php echo $this->getUrl($this->getLinkUrl()) ?>">
    which means the url can be relative or absolute, and any valid href, as long as Magento doesn't filter it. (I only checked that relative and absolute urls can be used.) So, you can provide the name of a page in the same directory, or a full url to another site. The following would be valid:
    Code:
    example.htm
    folder/file.htm
    http://example.com/folder/file.htm
    If you are talking about making the external links open in another tab or window, I found this topic showing how to modify left_col.phtml to add such a feature. Remember to keep a backup first, just in case. http://www.magentocommerce.com/boards/viewthread/25372/
    If you don't want to edit the code, there's an injection-type suggestion, too.

    I see now. The URL Key is different from a url. I didn't find a way to put an absolute url to another domain in the navigation menu without hacking something. http://collaborate.magento.com/magento/topics/linking_cms_pages_to_navigation_menu gives instructions to rewrite the menu link to another url, but it might not work with other domains, as it would then require a redirect rather than just a rewrite. Another way would be to edit the php files liisted at http://www.exploremagento.com/magento/editing-the-navigation.php to customize the way the menu is put together, specially adding the urls. You could also try asking on http://www.magentocommerce.com/boards for more advice.
