I have recently acquired a laptop with Vista Home Edition. A few days ago I downloaded the latest Mozilla Firefox browser but I am having difficulty figuring out how to download or “add on” a mail icon which will open my inbox when browsing.
Although I cannot remember how, I managed to successfully do this on my previous pc when using XP. Anyone got any ideas??
    Thanks

    Hi

Icon was removed in FF2.0 iirc ( I using FF3.0b at present and not many add-ons work to test ) but you can use the Get Mail add-on

Thanks but I've already tried that. Downloaded to desktop and windows wouldn't run it.

Not sure what you mean, but Windows isn't supposed to run it. If you downloaded an .xpi file, you install it through Firefox and add the icon to the toolbar.

Okay, when I followed the link posted by Halo I clicked on the "install" button. This would not work - "Firefox prevented this site from asking you to install software on your computer". I then thought it must be downloaded and run like an exe file. This would not work either. So am now unsure how to proceed.

If a yellow bar appears with the the message "Firefox prevented this site from asking you to install software on your computer", click the "Edit Options" button to right of the yellow bar. Then click "Allow" and then close the window. This gives Firefox permission to install add-ons to your browser.

Thanks. I've done what you suggested and Firefox has now added the "Get Mail" icon to the Add ons under the Tools menu. But I still cannot get it from there to the Toolbar.

Choose View -> Toolbars -> Customize to see the available icons; the Get Mail icon should be there and you can move it to the toolbar.

    Many thanks for that.
