I believe I have a corrupt "mailto" registry key. I am unable to click on an email hyperlink in a webbrowser or email document. It completely freezes my system and requires restarting. Searching on the web I found that it has something to do with the "mailto" registry key. There was a suggestion to add permissions to this key however when I go into the registry this key is not accessible to make any changes to it. I have tried to repair it with several run commands that were recommended but have had no luck. I see others have had the same problem in some of these discussion forums but have not found a solution yet. Can anyone provide a solution to this problem?

    Thanks

As you didn't mention the browser that you're using, I'm assuming IE. The link that Hipster Doofus provided did work for me with the same issue. I use FireFox as my primary browser, but couldn't open hyperlinks with either browser from email ( OE ). Changing IE to my default browser and rebooting cleared the problem, then I changed the setting to IE should check to see if it is the default browser, and haven't had any more problems!:)

Thanks for your help. I've tried this resolution and the problem continues. I have both Firefox and IE installed. IE is checked to see if it is the default webbrowser now and Outlook Express 6 is the default mail handler. I am running XP as the operating system. I read another solution that has to do with the "mailto" registry key and adding permissions to it but this file is not available to make any changes on my system. Any other ideas to try on how to resolve it?

    Thanks

Change your default mail handler. See if the freezing stops.

Thank you. I made Outlook Express the default mail handler and still received the same result of system freezing. Still no resolution...

Can you tell me a little more about this file. How does it work? Does it update/repair the mailto registry key?

    Code:
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto]
    "EditFlags"=hex:02,00,00,00
    "URL Protocol"=""
    @="URL:MailTo Protocol"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto\DefaultIcon]
    @="\"C:\\PROGRA~1\\MICROS~2\\OFFICE11\\OUTLOOK.EXE\",7"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto\shell]

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto\shell\open]

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto\shell\open\command]
    @="\"C:\\PROGRA~1\\MICROS~2\\OFFICE11\\OUTLOOK.EXE\" -c IPM.Note /m \"%1\""
All this file does is add the registry keys in the square brackets, and the values listed beneath them.

Actually, I just corrected it for Outlook Express instead of Outlook. That will work better in this case :) So re-merge it if you did so already.

Thanks. I will have to try it when I get back to the ailing computer. Can you explain how to re-merge for Outlook Express or can you send me the updated file? Sorry, I'm just not that techno savvy with this stuff and I know registry can be a delicate thing to work with. Very much appreciate your help.

I've tried installing the file attachment but I received an error accessing the registry. Any other ideas?

    What was the error?

Just that access to the registry was denied. This is the problem I'm having with this "mailto" key specifically. I can't access it even as adminstrator. It seems to be the only registry key that I can't access. The mailto key shows no data in the folder.

right click on it (in regedit) and choose permissions. Add your account to the list and give it full control.

That's the problem. It won't let me have access to the file. It tells me "access denied" when I try to update permissions. It's very strange. I can have access to any other file except this one.
