For one thing thing, if you're new to this sort of thing, I'd leave the registry alone. Most registry cleaning is not necessary and can actually cause serious troubles...

If you decide to go ahead with that, be sure to backup your registry first. I'd use Erunt http://majorgeeks.com/Erunt_d1267.html

For general cleaning use CCleaner http://majorgeeks.com/CCleaner_Standard_d5125.html
but again, leave the registry alone.

Defragging your drives is a good idea.

    Spot on!

AFAIK you can't use Erunt with Win 7 but you could use Registry Backup which does work well.

CCleaner's registry cleaner plays it really safe, simply removing registry entries that have become disconnected, but by the same token that doesn't do anything to improve system performance.

Win 7 does this automatically and very effectively without outside help.

I would advise keeping your system right up to date - use Secunia PSI to assure this - and creating a system restore point before installing any software but don't clutter up your system with software you don't need. Have strong antivirus and antispyware programs active and scan frequently.

Do that and your system should be just fine.

Suposedly, ERUNT will work with Windows 7, but some adjustments are required.
The Tweaking.com program is an easier solution but it's auto backup feature works differently.

CCleaner Slim does not have the Yahoo toolbar.
