I have recently purchased a new external hard drive and my windows vista pc will not recognise the drive. It should be a plug n play drive.

I think the problem occurec when I unplugged another external hard drive without safetly removing it first as the PC wont recognise that drive also.

Have I damaged the windows driver that recognises external hard drives?

It still recognises my Camera when I plug it in via USB.

The motherboard is MSI K9VGM-V and am running a Matrix Computer with Windows Vista Home Premium.

The two external Hard Drives are: ATMT 360-U and Western Digital My Book Essential 2 WD10000H1U

Under Device Manager the drive shows up in Other Devices with the yellow triangle and when I check Driver Details it says no driver installed.

IEEE 1394 Bus Host Controller shows working ok and the Universal Serial Bus Controllers have got all devices working properly.

Could this be a problem with PnP? Any help would be appreciated as I have tried google and they were useless, I couldnt find anything. Thanks guys.

    Hi

If in USB devices your external shows with its driver a yellow ! mark then likely the mass driver is corrupted, uninstall the driver ( highlighted below from my PC and using a WD Passport ext HD ) from Device Manager and then unplug your ext hard drive, then re-plug it in and Vista should re-aquire the device and driver.

This is picture of Device Manager and the USB Mass Storage Device is my WD Passport ext HD

Then this is what you will likely see once the OS has reinstalled the driver, and you click the balloon message, then go intal My Computer and the drive should show.

Do this with the other ext drive as they all have specific PID numbers, which is why when you plug in a new USB pen or HD that the PC has never seen before it loads the mass driver for that device ID.
