Major headaches

Upgrading my wife's Win 98 system to Win XP Pro, or at least trying to. She has a 1.3 Ghz HP Pavilion 510C system. She had previously lost the winXP home version that was with it and did not have a restore disk (was on the hard drive that got wiped) so we place a copy of Win 98 onto it (had it previously). This worked fine but she wanted XP Pro so I finally broke down and got it for her. Now the problem arises.

After numerous fdisks and reinstalls of Win 98 we are still not having any luck with the upgrade. She keeps getting the following error:

Setup cannot continue Contact Microsoft Technical Support (Error 535ff58h)

Anyone know what this error is and how to overcome it? I hate to call M$ tech support because I don't wish to spend eternity on the phone with them. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
