I am trying to use an old computer at work to split some peripherals off another machine. However, the machine will need to be connected to the network, so I have to get these problems worked out first. The computer specs are:

    P3 500Mhz
    320mb ram
    Win98

I have tried to run all of the steps in the Spyware tutorial. I downloaded all of the suggested programs and began going down the list.
    1. Trend Micro found 268!! infected files. 266 were WORM_BAGLE.AU and 2 were HTML_ADVER.A. Trend micro could remove all but 6 of the BAGLE worms as these were running processes. I rebooted in safe mode and removed these 6 manually.

    2. I ran Symantec's scanner and got a SAFE rating on everything except virus protection, which I will install as soon as I get this cleaned up.

    3. Stinger found 6 infected files and deleted all of them

    4. I ran Ccleaner and removed 108Mb worth of crap.

Then troubles with the tutorial began.

    5. When I ran Ad-Aware SE, there were 151 critical objects found -- mostly dataminers. These quarantined just fine, but then when AdAware tried to delete these items, the program froze and the system began to run at a crawl. I tried this scan twice with the same result. So I decided to run Spybot first and then come back to Ad-Aware.

    6. Spybot found 100+ problems and deleted all but 8 -- running processes. Spybot asked permission to run at startup to take care of these remaining problems and I clicked yes and rebooted. Spybot began a new scan at startup and ran for about 20 minutes. Then just as the scan finished, the system froze. I got a fatal error in explorer.exe and an error message saying that Win98 needed to be reinstalled. I rebooted and the system booted into windows, but crashed twice when I tried to start IE. This is as far as I have gotten in the tutorial, because because of these problems.

Any help or suggestions with these problems will be greatly appreciated. I am using another computer to access the internet right now, so responses may be a little slow. The internet connection on the other computer is working, albeit slowly, so I can download any other tools if necessary.

    Thanks,
    Publius
