    Hi! :)

I've tried to download a couple of programs to try out and I keep getting this message (when I try to open the program to setup): "The setup files are corrupted. Please obtain a new copy of the program." OK . . . I try downloading from the program's website and I still get the same message. Desktop Scout was one of the programs this happened to. Could it be the settings of my computer?? My computer info (let me know if you need more info): Windows ME, 20gb hard drive, AVG, Outpost, AOL (dial-up) ISP.

Thank you, I appreciate any help! :)

Empty your temp files and try the download(s) again.

    1. Quit Internet Explorer and quit any instances of Windows Explorer.
    2. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
    3. On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
    4. In the Delete Files dialog box, click to select the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
    5. Click OK.

Oh yeah, completely forgot about the download issue on some stuff. Let us know if you are unable to get LeechGet also.

I downloaded LeechGet and got the same message!!! Yikes!!! This is crazy!! Do you all think it has something to do with my settings? Could a virus cause this? Thanks again!

It dawned on me that maybe there was a misunderstanding. The files download fine, but when I try to open the file in order to set up the program, I get the aforementioned message. This message has never come up before. Does that clarify things? Thank again to you all for your help, I really appreciate it, thanks again!

Are you downloading with a download manager ?

If so try downloading without it, I know this is a pain with dial-up; but if the files in question are not overly large it should not be a major issue

or follow the recommendations in the second link I posted.

I haven't tried downloading for a while from here with a download manager, but from memory I believe the files will appear to download fully but will not work.

No, just regular downloading from whatever browser (I was using AOL's brower at the time). IE is really slow and I may need to adjust the settings, but I'm not sure what to adjust. FoxFire is slow too and this is why I started using AOL more, especially for downloading or even just getting into/unto certain websites. Does any of the above make a difference? I did everything I was asked to in the other posts above. Thanks again shanemail, I appreciate your help. :)

ETA - I'll be back a little later on.

with my limited knowledge this seems to be an AV or FIREWALL problem that your PC is seeing the downloads as Malwear and will not open them.

have you tried turning OFF your firewall just to see??

I tried opening the setup file with Universal Viewer (very helpful tool - thank you MG :) ). The security warning box popped up and said: Authenicode signature not found. This is after I turned Outpost and AVG off. I downloaded a program and was able to open it, but I was still unable to open the other files.

The only program you mentioned by name doesn't run on ME, that's why you are unable to install it.

OK, I am still continuing to have this problem. :( Any more ideas? Thanks!

You said, "let me know if you need more info". What are the other programs?

Do you all think that if I remove AVG and Outpost from my computer and then try to download these programs from MG's Covert Opps page, THEN might this problem be solved if it's a problem with these programs? I don't know what else it could be!!! :(

plodr - I just went thru the list of Covert Opps and tried to download various ones, to no avail. Most will download and then when I try to open them I get the aforementioned messages. :(

Removing AVG and Outpost won't fix the problem. I run AVG, so that isn't the cause of your problem. Some of the programs won't work on ME (I just checked the first 6 or 7 listed). Did you double check by going to the author's site that the programs you selected will work on ME?
All the solutions point to what Matacumbie posted, that is, cleaning out the temporary files.
My one last thought is that maybe AOL is somehow preventing you from getting the complete file so it is corrupted.

plodr - Other than Desktop Scout (I made a mistake and did not check that it was for XP), all the other programs I downloaded were for all Windows O/Ss. I usually try to download from the Author's site first, if there's a problem then I try one from MG. Like I said before, I do/did clean out all temp files with CCleaner, CleanUp, etc. and then reboot and attempt the download and I get the same results - corrupt files. Thanks. :(

    Any other ideas?

I had another thought. What about using a registry cleaner? I have a couple that I downloaded from MG - Registry Seeker and PC On Point.

And one more thought. I just noticed in Spybot S&D that under Immunize, I have "Enable permanent blocking of bad addresses in IE" checked. Would that cause this download problem? Should I make some type of adjustment in Sypbot? Thanks again!
