    HELP
I wasn't sure where to post this so I am trying here.
I am on very very slow dial-up and when I try to download a program the internect kicks off before I get even half way into the download and freezes up the download, what do I do? I need AVG, Spybot and Adaware. Is there somewhere to get a disk for them?
You can reach me at <snipped email> I really NEED a virus program as there is none on this computer.
    Thanks, Myst

One thing you might try doing is using another computer that has a faster internet connection (like a friend's or a relative's) to download the .exe program installation files, copy them to a CD or DVD and then copy it to your computer so that you can install them from there.

I could be wrong about this but as far as I know, the FREE versions of those three products you mentioned AVG, Spybot and Adaware are only available as "downloads" and therefore none of the aforementioned companies will likely send you a CD (of the freeware versions, I mean).

However, you could try emailing their support to ask if they will send you a CD containing a copy the .exe program install files. Sometimes software companies will do this for a nominal fee to cover postage and handling.

If you want to buy the AVG Pro shareware version (on CD) you might also try Amazon.com. Also you could check out your local computer store. Quite a while back I can remember seeing the AVG Anti-Virus Professional Edition CD (shareware version) for sale on a shelf at a MicroCenter computer store but they did not carry CD for the AVG free version.

Side Note: I know how you feel. I haven't had dialup in years but I often experienced the same exact problem. If DSL or cable internet is available in your area you should really consider looking into it. It costs a little more but it avoids the hassles with the so-called "dial-up timeouts" for larger program downloads.

    Good Luck!

    Hi

One small application that may help you is a download manager, these applications allow you to resume a download from where you left off, if you get kicked offline, this one is a good one http://www.majorgeeks.com/FlashGet_d461.html ( 4.44mb in size ) and free, why I choose this one is its one which will resume downloads from Majorgeeks, some other download managers will not.

Once installed run the software, goto the specific download you want eg. AVG and click one of the download link, a download window will popup, in this you will see a Click Here if it does not , right click this and copy shortcut, then open Flashget up and click New, it will ask you where you wish to downlaod it too, by default the software creates a Downloads folder in your root C: drive, choose this, then it will start downloading, if you get cutoff just highlight the download in the list and click Start.

May help you get the applications you wish.

Thanks. I am staying with my daughter for a few months out in the middle of nowhere and there is no DSL or anything available except dial-up. sigh
I am on her new computer which had a trial version of Nortons, but that expired and her computer is windows vista so I can't even transfer the programs from my computer.
    Thanks, Myst

And the OS has no relevence to download speeds.

However if your trying to convey that if Myst has the full downloaded executables to the likes of AVG, Spybot or Ad-Aware on her own PC, then if they are Vista compatible versions of these applications then she can transfer then to her daughters Vista PC, and install them.

But please if replying to a question add enough information so people know what your refering to and why, cheers.

In order to transfer these programs I would have to put the computer back together. It is pieced out. I have the back up hard drive (slave) in my drawer as it has my book on it and I take it back and forth to the UK with me. The CD writer is in my new computer (which is not on-line) I have the old master installed in another computer my grandkids use, with no CD writer in it. So to get anything off the old computer I would have to tear it apart and put it back together.
I did download that download manager, but it too freezes up and I can't get it to resume the download, sigh
I guess I am going to have to find someone that can download onto a disk for me.

What you really need is a very small download manager. A download manager lets you resume the download when your connection drops.
Of course the manager must be small so you can get it downloaded and installed before you are kicked off line again.
I used to use one call Fresh Download - free and no spyware but you do need to register to download it. Let me look around and see what is currently good, small, free and works with Vista.

I think I found one. It's free, works with Vista and is only a 678kb download so you should be able to grab it before your connection drops.
    It is called Download Express
    http://www.metaproducts.com/de.html
and once installed, you will be able to resume all the broken downloads.
You can start to download AVG then when the connection drops, you can start a download later and it will pick up from where it left off so you don't have to keep downloading the same beginning bytes all the time.

I've used it in the past but it has been years since I've been on dialup so I started searching using the wikipedia page as a guide as to what is available. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_download_managers

For the record, not all servers allow downloads to be resumed, it does depend on the software used to serve your downloads.

I managed to download FlashGet, but you are right, it won't resume and it seems to freeze up at about 68% downloaded. I will try the other one. Thanks

I finally broke down and set the old computer back together and burned the 3programs I needed. They are now on the new computer, just need to be updated.

Thanks for all your help and suggestions. It is good to know that you guys are here for me when I need help.

Buy a USB flash drive. It is small to carry between the two countries and if you get one in 1 GB (around $10) or even larger, you can load up tons of programs that you want to install on any computer that has a USB port! People stuck on dialup often visit friends with highspeed, download large files then carry them home on flash drives.

Thank you, I will have to find a USB flash drive before I head back to Scotland next summer, I am sure it is lighter than my slave drive.
I wonder why many new computers don't come with the wiring to hook up a slave drive? I would slap this one in my computer and not have to set the old one back up to get or add things, but the flash drive sounds like the way to go, thanks so much.
