Majorgeeks needs some upkeep

Since I noticed some new stickies I decided to comment on what I find to be out of control on this site and it's never corrected .

Now I know you can't control all deceptive ads (many including the bad stuff) but to allow the (Majorgeeks recommended download ) ads to stand and not do anything about it is unacceptable.

Here is just one example shown in a screenshot. ( I know very well what that program is and there's nothing good about it , (Reimage) I was badly infected with the Huer Trojan by clicking and downloading that program a while back) Get rid of the (Majorgeeks recommended ) stuff and I bet there would be considerably less people asking for help.

Oops , now I get it , you want the traffic so of course your not going to clean them up.

Never mind, my bad.

 

You started out ok, then quickly devolved to a jerk.

You did not get a trojan from here, though I went ahead and forwarded this to Major Attitude to address/discuss with you.

 

What a ridiculous statement! Since the help people get here at Major Geeks is FREE and the people giving the help are also giving up their free time to help others you statement has no merit. Besides that it is incorrect!

 

Your statement is horrendous. People come on this site to ask for help and people who give the help and support are out of their free time and choose to do it, they don't have to do it but choose to due to the fact people love in what they are doing.

You need to serious think before making any comments like that. Also Majorgeeks site is mostly free of malware and viruses if not then apporiate action will be taken to make sure they are.

Of course like all reasonable forums MG appreciates constructive criticism and there are many ways to make your point without publicly starting a thread attacking the forum stakeholders as well as the staff and active members with your inaccurate and malicious bile. Maybe you are just trolling and if so it is showing terribly poor judgement on your part. I commend Tim on his balanced and restrained response to this attack on the ethics of MGs as I personally would not have been so gracious. To even suggest we are generating ongoing business by including malware in our downloads is absurd.
Members here are lucky that Tim & Jim are so selective with the software to which MG offers links as opposed to most other forums that just open the floodgates to everything whether it is good or bad or even current.

There is an old saying that I think is applicable here and it goes like this:-
You catch more ants using honey than vinegar!

 

Like many of us here, I've lost sleep to achieve a solution to someone's issue. Most of us donate our time here out of the goodness of our hearts.

The vitriol in your post is pure tripe. I not only find it inflammatory, but downright defamatory and insulting. Do you realize your description of the malware issue you encountered is not only vague, but pretty generic? There are literally thousands of variants of this type of malware, and your failure to be specific about the infection makes your post even more inane.

Where are your removal logs? Where are your heuristics? What AV software do you use? Your screenshot is about as good a form of proof as saying if an elephant was born in a tree, then it must be a bird.

Unless you actually have something rock solid with specific and concrete proof which would ACTUALLY HELP, I would suggest you not embarrass yourself like this in the future.

CCN, as my grandmother used to state. Say it in your head first. If it does not sound correct. Then do not state it out loud.

Don't know how I forgot about it but I did .

I stand by them completely , just wish I worded it differently .

Unfortunately you all took my statements completely wrong and that's my fault , I never meant Majorgeeks likes to not clean up things because you want to infect peoples machines , nothing could be further from than the truth .

Actually I am one of very few that has taken the time to start a few different threads saying that the Majorgeeks helpers don't get the credit they deserve and people need to commend them and appreciate them because they do it out of the kindness in their hearts and not for monetary gain. Thank you very much

As my first thread showed, I often do run into issues with people misunderstanding what I'm saying and like I said that's my fault not yours .

I always say it as I see it without any regard to being politically correct (something that imo is bringing this great Country to it's knees by the way) and it's no wonder some take issue with me and I have no problem with it .

Todays World is full of fakes and Politically corrects , I want no part of it.

Just wanted to respond to your criticisms which I actually appreciate because it's real . I will also move on and not burden Majorgeeks anymore and like I said every time I received help in the past , I truly appreciated all your efforts and you all should be very proud of what your doing . Please delete my post in the software forum , thank you

Like I said in my first post (and what I showed an example of with a screenshot ) is very problematic , when you attempt to download one of your programs a bunch of other ads with the word "download" jump out and try to confuse the downloader in hoping they click one of the ad links (where I got the Reimage Trojan) from a deceptive ad (not from MJ) when I was brand new to computing.

Yes, I have no problems admitting I only started with computers a little over a year ago but I have gained immense knowledge by studying relentlessly on sites like MJ and now I can see how newbies can easily be confused and get into trouble .

My screenshot demonstrates this confusion by ads manipulating their own download links by using the "Majorgeeks recommended download" sign which just makes things more chaotic for someone who doesn't know better .

If you guys don't see that as an issue then I don't know what to tell you but I think it's needs to be looked into and corrected .

The constant deceptive ads are imo one of the biggest problems in the World of computing today .

Again , imo , now I'm done.

I know how hard you guys work , I was only posting what I thought was an issue but if you can't or don't have the time to attend to it that's understood .

Yes, MG is in the upper echelon of websites for sure and you should be proud of what you and your partner have accomplished .

Having help like Chaslang , Kestriel and Tim W among many others I don't have experience with doesn't hurt and I have commended them on numerous occasions.

I guess my comments were more of a recommendation and if it was possible to do but it didn't come off that way and that's my fault.

You can only do so much I know but if you ever get some time I would post a sticky saying Majorgeeks is in no way promoting or is affiliated with many of these ads .

Use caution when clicking on things and make sure you are downloading from the official Majorgeeks mirrors(which are located directly to the right of the programs) and not above or below are official download mirrors.

The above is the only thing I was trying to say , nothing less and nothing more , whether you agree or not I have no control over , just my opinion.

Of course it was the 'Oops now I get it' comment that caused such an adverse reaction, and completely undermined your main point about the ads with their bold Download links. On more than one occasion I've recommended an MG download to someone only to find later that they have been misled by those bold Download buttons and got something they didn't want.

One answer of course is to use an ad blocker, though MG will complain a little if you do, but for the site to remain viable it has no choice - it has to carry ads - but I would like to think the owners are doing their best to minimise the risk of ppl accidentally downloading the wrong thing.

 

Hey ccn, I stand by my first reply because your attack on the ethics of MGs couldn't be clearer. Your closing comment may possibly have been intended as a throw away wisecrack but I and most others didn't read it this way and it was particularly offensive to the hardworking staff and members.
As Tim says, "We can't read web pages for you or show you where to click." You need to take some responsibility for your actions instead of blaming others.

Going forward, if you choose to continue hanging around MGs, then maybe when posting, just sticking to the provable facts and not to untrue emotive generalisations will cause less friction and draw the response for which you were hoping.

Must admit that in the beginning I didn't like the ads when doing a search from the main page, but these folks have to pay for all of the bandwidth I am using somehow.:-o Does seem, as of late, that the http://www.majorgeeks.com page loads a bit slower than it did in the past, while the forums are still quick to load. Perhaps it is all of the links on that page, although I do disable prefetch in my browser, :major I don't believe that is the reason. Perhaps the servers are located in a different area than they once were, I believe they were once close to home.:cool Maybe the fact that the DNS I use is located outside the U.S. now?:confused I don't clear the DNS cache very often though.
